Just imagine. You and 'her indoors' move into a new house and she tuns round and says, 'Hey, you can have this room for your home cinema!'. What could be better! This has (nearly) happened to my best mate. I say nearly, as they haven't moved in yet. They've had their offer accepted and it looks rosey. The dedicated 'home cinema' room is bloody awkward though. The rear wall is a large patio door, one side wall is a huge built-in cupboard (which he is happy with as it's perfect for his vinyl collection), on the opposite wall (in the centre) is a big double door into the conservatory and on the one remaining wall (opposite the patio doors) is another set of double doors into the study (more over to one side). Total room size is approx 12'x10'. The longest length is from patio doors to study. So there isn't really a clear wall for the 42" plasma. Best I could come up with is this (see attachment). It would mean keeping one of the study doors permanently closed. The gap between the study doors and the side wall is not wide enough for a 42" plasma and a pair of floorstanders without a speaker being in front of the door. Sorry for going on, I'm a bit of a rambler.

You are going to get a lot of glare from the patio doors in that position and the sound stage looks pretty small too. I think your mate should take the plunge and get rid of the cupboard (he could pout his vinyl in the loft where it belongs ). This wall is where the screen should be .

If its a dedicated room, could you go for a drop down screen for cinema use which disappears into the ceiling during the day? Streetrod does this here

Or is it likely to be more permanent?

A screen would be a great idea, but he is buying a 42" plasma telly off me and I want the cash.

Well, he could certainly remove the cupboards, and build a shelving unit for his vinyl and put it on another wall. I'll have to get a proper look the room. I've only seen it through the patio doors. Can't get in yet.

That looks like the best bet. Maybe put the screen on that wall and build vinyl storage around it, you could do something pretty special I think, maybe even include a screen to come down in front of it all for a projector in the future.

Well, apparently the house hasn't been decorated since 1976. So the whole place needs modernising. Which means it's a good opportunity to totally strip the 'cinema room' and custom build it from scratch.
