Is this possible?

Hi all, just after a bit of help if possible.
In the process of decorating my lounge at the moment & i have a question!
Have removed my old fireplace surround and also an electric fire, obviously this has left me with a chunk of wiring hanging out of the wall, this was fed from a 13a fused spur socket further along the wall.
Now what i want to know is can i just use that existing cable to wire up a double socket instead?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Re: Is this possible?

Yes, it will just act as a spur.

Re: Is this possible?

Sorry to hijack but I have the same sort of fused spur sitting doing nothing just behind my AV rack, would I be able to just replace the existing fused spur with a single socket?
Its never going to be used as I didn't bother getting a fire fitted.

Re: Is this possible?

I have a quick question as i'm gonna do the socket this weekend.
The metal box that the socket unit mounts on to has a terminal to earth it out, does that mean i'll have to split the earth cable into 2? I.E.One into the rear of the socket & one into the metal box?

Can anyone confirm?

Thanks,Ian

If you've got a bit of sense, and have touched electrics before, then do it yourself. It's no different to changing a light fitting really.

If you're not sure or in any doubt, get some advice. Ring the local coulcil and speak to building control, they should be able to give you a definate answer as to where you stand legally. IMHO you can do this sort of thing yourself.

As for splitting the earth, my philosophy is, if its got an earth, it's there for a reason! I'd split the cable and earth both parts.

Usually you run the earth to the faceplate and then an other bit of earth wire from the faceplate to the backbox.
