Been toying with the idea of getting the TV and speakers wall mounted however i dont want to have all the wires etc.. on show. After reading some threads on here i think i have decided to go for a floating wall of some sort.

The layout of the room is below:

As you can see its not a bad shaped room (sorry for no dimensions but at work at the moment). The current set up is the at Wall A however it is all just sat on top of the cabinents (see below pic). To build a floating wall here would be ok as it is in a sort of alcove and it could take up most of it and allow the rest of the room to be free. However im a bit concerned about accessing the plugs etc.. if they are behind a wall of mdf.

The other side (wall B, below picture) is completely free and having a floating wall here would mean good access to plugs etc.. but it would use the whole wall leaving not a lot of space in the room. Also cables would need to be run for Satalite around the room to the other side.

I really dont know which wall would be best, especially as we plan on getting some new dvd/cd storage at some point. Any ideas that people can put forward if they had a room similar? Also which wall do you think would be best for a floating wall if i went down this route?

Personally I would use wall B. Yes, you may lose storage space but a declutter and a good think about where you could put things (eg. wall-mounted cabinets above a sofa on wall A) may resolve this.

Personally, I'd definitely go for wall A. The way to deal with the plugs would be to break into the mains loop of the existing sockets above the ceiling, drill through the ceiling of the cupboard, run trunking down the inside wall of the cupboard containing the cables for the extended mains loop and then drill through the cupboard wall to pass cables through to alcove wall at the left of Wall A. You could then have as many sockets as required placed on the alcove wall giving easy access. Inexpensive project, minimal work as you won't need to chase the channeling through and re-plaster. The existing plugs could even be left where they are, redundant as they would be behind your floating wall.

Taking spurs from other sockets quite easy then? The cupboard already has a double socket in there which could be utilised?

I would go for A also, as for taking spurs make sure the socket in the cupboard is on the ring main as it is not good practice to spur of a spur.

Just reading about spurs, not overly sure if it is on the ring or not. Might be best just putting an extension wire through the wall and mounting it near the floor.

Wilding is correct - do not wire a spur onto a spur.

If there is a double socket inside the cupboard then your best bet is to check that it is on the ring main. If it is, you're in luck. Remove the backplate and drill through the wall. Once you've got your supply through to the wall on the alcove, next to wall A, wire in your sockets.

IF IN DOUBT, GET A QUALIFIED SPARKY TO DO IT FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you don't want it to cost too much, do the drilling etc and even go as far as fitting the backplates where you want them. The sparky can just drop the wires in then and it won't take too long

Cheers, i will no doubt have a look at it. Need to do some cable routing. Like i said i might just get an extension lead and run that through the wall but will check first.
