Lost this first time around so here we go again.

ReTrO & Taz Productions welcome you to another DIY audio masterpiece.

RTP-15

This subwoofer utilises an Adire Audio Temepst 15" bass driver fitted inside the Adire reference small enclosure (65L). The enclosure has been made by Taz, using the latest MDF bonding techniques (involving lots of high voltages, yeah!)

It will be using an unknown amplifer at present, but it will most likely be either a BKElec DT300 plate amp or a pair of BKElec 200w amp modules. In the short term it will use the 110 amp module from the Mk.1 RTP-10 project.

It has a 12 band parametric eq offboard, in the form of a Behringer Feedback Destroyer Pro DSP 1124P , to help with the in-room response.

The enclosure will be finished in black ash fablon, as supplied and fitted by the man Taz himself. I will be making a stretchy sock grill to go over the front.

Looks good as always but why the High Q 0.9 design you will be getting a lot more output in the higher bass region, the EQ will help a lot but a mid Q 0.707 or even a lower Q design would probebly sound deeper for home cinema.

Space is an issue here micb3rd. Otherwise I would have gone for much larger box or maybe even an IB design in a wall or door.

I reckon we may be able to get away with a touch of EQ to rbing the bottom end out a bit, though it may not be needed if it can shift the air well.

What about building a sub into the floor?? - with all the box etc below the floorboards and speaker grille recessed into the floor??
I can access below the floor very simply.

That is something I would consider if I owned my own house and had a job.

My HC at home is in a spare bedroom when there's some space. I'm hoping to get a room built ar some point though in me garden if I'm still at home when I have a good job.

It will be to partner it sort of replace it. I've not had the pleasure of using the JL myself because I've been at Uni and the sub's been at Taz's place.

He will be using the Temepest one also for a while. Hope he enjoys it.

Nathan_silly - I was notthinking of anything that extreme!!! May be just a decent sized MDF box with a good sized driver.

The BFD has now arrived with Mr Taz, which is good news.

I've given up on Maplin sending me the correct cable, so I'm going to make up the leads for now with the Van Damme Unbalanced Patch cable they have sent, should be pretty good anyway.

The cable will be on it's way hopefully on wednesday, so that the BFD can be given a run.

All is looking good.



ED: Just ordered the speaker cloth from Maplin along with some more acoustic wadding.

I also ordered today some 'more' of the Van Damme Starquad mic cable, hopefully it will arrive correctly this time. I have also ordered a pair of Neutrik Profi phono plugs from Maplin.

I have found the build quality of all the Neutrik products to be very high, and can recommend them to anybody.

Update:

The correct Van Damme cable and the Neutrik Profi phono's arrived on monday morning and were made up into the correct leads. These being 1m phono to 1/4" jack and 3m 1/4" jack to phono, for processor to BFD to sub accordingly.

These will be despatched in the morning, and hopefully be with Taz to play with over the weekend.


In the meantime I have been have bad ideas about making another sub based around the BKElec BSB 12 100 and a 100w plate amp. Either a BSB 100 @ £118, or a DT 150 @ £103. This would be put into a 50L enclosure (approx 400x400x420mm external), and would basically be a REL Q100E. Costs for this would be between £150-200 to make, and should end with a very satisfying subwoofer.

Would you use any EQ with that? Linkwitz? I'm still umming about what to do for my sub project, but reckon the Shiva/Lab12 is still the way to go.

I guess you mean with a BSB driver.

If I went down that avenue I would build a pair of the subs and use one channel of the BFD for each. These would be attached to the left and right front channels, or as left and right subs, depending on what processing I will be using.

Cables arrived with Taz on saturday.

Connection will be done saturday 24th after the second sub has been completed, and tattoos have been applied to various constructors.

Why not use a Linkwitz transform EQ? You could have a lower Q and a lower -3db for the price of less SPL.

We shall have to see how it performs EQ'less to start with. Then we'll be giving the BFD a run to see what difference it can make.
