Cellar With A Reef

Welcome to my thread, not been on here long but I am now brave enough to start a log...So be gentle

I moved into my new house 18 months ago and one of the main attractions were the cellar rooms! One with be a fish room with a 8x4x2.5 in wall reef which will be viewable from the dedicated Cinema room.

The majority of work will be carried out by myself to keep costs down.

Get comfy as it will be a lonnngggggggggggggggg one...

Here are some pictures of what I looked like 18 months ago;

Pic one will be the fish room (currently a gym with a sauna) the things you do for pets

Pic 2 will be the cinema room (this room will be knocked through into the hall area to give me a 5msq room)

Re: Cellar With A Reef

Worked has comenced

The previous owners made a poor attempt at damp proofing the cellar so back to the start... I had a little helper help pull all the plasterwork down and remove radiators etc..

The next step was to remove the Sauna....

Ooooh this is going to be a good un. I especially like the fact that you're removing a gym and sauna to make way for a home cinema and fish tank. Who needs to be fit and healthy when you can spend hours on your backside in front of a big screen with a nice glass of Wolfblass in your hand and a bowl of Orville Redenbacher's finest on your lap

Re: Cellar With A Reef

Once the rooms were cleared I concentrated on the fish room, the reason to do this was to help it mature. So I wasn't left looking at a pile of rock..

I promise to rush this bit as I'm sure most won't be interested

Where to tank will go;

getting ready for the RSJ

Foundations in place for the tank stand...After all it will hold approx 600Gallons

One hole waiting for a tank..

One tank in place

to give you an idea the tank is supported on two concrete colomns and is supported by 3 RSJ's

Re: Cellar With A Reef

cool... thats a whole heap of plumbing right there...
gonna look sooo good when finished.

are you gonna have the tanks lights work on remote so you can turn em off when watching a movie?

also will give the fish a chance to get a better view without the reflections in the tank... you just need a little popcorn bucket that can release food for them during the movie lol...

Awesome fish tank! Very impressive, Any chance of some pictures showing it from further away so we can get a view of it as part of the room?

Re: Cellar With A Reef

Has an electrician seen this?

Looking at this from a professional point of view (I'm a swimming pool engineer), putting all those sockets behind the pipe work is a big no no. Would you fancy reaching through the water spraying from a cracked pipe to turn the pump off?

Re: Cellar With A Reef

Thanks Guys

Here is a list of what equipment I will be using.

Pioneer 43" plasma (for daytime viewing)
Infocus IN76 with a Beamax 96" electric screen (bargain via Fleebay)
Onkyo 605
PS3
Kef 7.1 surround including;
IQ7's Front
IQ5's rear
IQ8DS for Sides
and a PW2500 Sub...

I know there's not much around for a 7.1, but as I am running all the cables etc I thought I might future proof as much as I can..

More piccys on there way

Yes there is a pump and sump, but hoping it won't get any use at it only suffers from condensation (well it has in the last 18 years).

So fingers crossed

Ok cool, I inspected a basement cinema just yesterday that had £30k spent on it, only for it to flood with 175mm of water.

That must be soul destroying for the owners, what was the cause of the flood?

Re: Cellar With A Reef

Yeah it's an amazing house but they just want to sell it now for all the grief it's given them.

As for the reasons, groundwater pressure comes to bear on below ground structures typically because of what we refer to as 'perched' water tables. This is a situation whereby the excavated and backfilled ground around a structure (i.e. when you dig a hole in the ground, build a structure in it, then backfill), more readily accepts water (usually rainfall) than the more consolidated/compact undisturbed ground in which the excavation was formed. If water collects in the backfilled area, it can then pressure on a structure.

If nothing is in place to deal with such pressures you end up with a flooded basement. I spend my working life remedying or preventing such issues and see flooded basement cinemas from time to time, certainly two in the last month or so.

Their fish tank leaked...

Seriously though, this has the potential to be a great setup... I love watching these builds progress, gives me loads of ideas for mine (some day!).

Definitely gonna be checking back....
