TV Mount Question

Hi there,

I'm planning on wall mounting my TV today as the bracket arrived. On reading the instructions it says that I must align it to studs within the wall. The problem is I haven't got a stud finder and even If I got one there is no guarantee that the studs would be in the right place so the TV sits in the middle of the wall.

I've noticed some people on here have screwed wooden blocks onto the wall to ask as a stud. Would I better doing that myself, or does anyone have any experience with simply putting the mount straight onto the wall without finding studs? I don't mind putting wooden blocks on, but I'm wary that it will make the TV pretrude even further from the wall which will make it look a bit silly.

Can anyone help?
Cheers, Matt

Re: TV Mount Question

you either need to find the studs and screw to them or introduce new ones attached to the old ones , plasterboard alone WILL NOT BE STRONG ENOUGH !!!! , can you not remove a piece of plasterboard the same size as the mount and see what is behind ???

Re: TV Mount Question

Thanks for your reply. I can't really damage the wall too badly as I rent the property. I'll go and get a stud detector and see whether the place I want it is suitable. I should have really done that before I even started, trust me to miss out a fundemental part of the whole process!

Re: TV Mount Question

One way you can locate studs is to use a thin (terminal) screwdriver, bradawl or even a nail and work your way along the wall in the general area you want to mount the TV, if i remember right, the normal distance between studs is 16 inches (give or take) you'll know when you hit a stud, when you do, push your bradawl into the wall about an inch or so further along untill you hit nothing, to get an idea of its centre.

Its a bit hit and miss and you'll be left with some small holes but nothing a bit of filler wont fix.

Cheers

Re: TV Mount Question

I got myself a cheap stud detector for less than a tenner from woolies. Obviously you get what you pay for, but it was good enough for me to work out I've got studs separated at 600mm.
