painting/finishing edges of mdf

Looking to build some mdf cabinets for av gear as I can't find anything suitable. But when ever I use mdf I can never seem to get a good finish on the cut edges.
Does anyone have any tips for painting the edges?
Thanks

Use a small short pile roller - that'll do nicely!

Re: painting/finishing edges of mdf

A router and router bits can really make all the difference in finishing off a TV stand or cabinet. As for painting, sand the MDF with a fine sandpaper (150 grit) and make sure you wipe off all the dust before painting. Paint with primer and sand again. The edges will really absorb the paint so you will need to paint 2-3 coats no matter what type of paint you use.

That said, what I would do is tack some decorative finished pine round the edges and then paint it. You can get moulded pieces for edging and that will provide a much nicer edge than painting MDF.

Try sealing with a shellac based sealer/primer as opposed to a water based one. Zinsser BIN is quite good. (if you can find it)

I read in some motor forums about sealing the end of the boards with some glue (superglue I think). Stops the ends roughing up once you paint it.

The cut ends need sealing or they will suck the paint in

I apply a coat of unibond then sand using fine sandpaper when set

paints up a treat then

Re: painting/finishing edges of mdf

I made an equipment rack using mdf. To get a good finish on all the pieces, I worked out a cutting plan, then went to B&Q and got them to cut out all the bits for me on their big machine. This gave a perfect finish to all the edges. Would this work for you?
