Fold down screen - pipe dream?

Hi All, looking for some advice on a screen project that I'm thinking about.

Basically I have a window in the room where I plan to put my PJ (ceiling mounted) and the only real place that the screen can be sited is directly in front of this window.

In addition I need to replace the current ceiling in that room and add some soundproofing to it.

What I thought might be neat was to have the screen as a "board" recessed into the ceiling which folded down from the ceiling on hinges like a large loft hatch which would then cover the window (in it's down position) to make the room dark at the same time.

Basically like a big one of these -

Any thoughts welcome

I was thinking of building it from some lightweight-ish material and painting the screen side with PJ paint or a home made paint mix.

Any ideas, potential pit falls, advice, abuse or general chit chat welcome !!
Cheers

Re: Fold down screen - pipe dream?

it could work well but you may just wish to hide a normal screen in the ceiling.

Re: Fold down screen - pipe dream?

Thanks Para, that's probably the way I'll go in the end but there are a couple of things that might sway me in the folding screen direction

1) I though it would be cheaper to DIY than buy
2) I think it will look inconspicuous (the room's also a home office and a spare bedroom!)
3) I just like the idea - especially if it "disappears" into the ceiling without a trace!!

Maybe too much to take on with my limited DIY skills but I thought the joiner who puts in the new ceiling would be able to do it relatively easily - if I can tell him exactly what I want him to do that is...

Re: Fold down screen - pipe dream?

If you had a standard pull down screen then the roller for this could easily be located in the ceiling with a drop down flap which hid it away above the ceiling when not in use. The drop down flap would be the width of the screen but would only need to be an inch or so to allow the screen to pass down through it. Alternatively do away with the drop down flap and just have a wide slit in the ceiling which the screen slides through. Installation would be from above and you would have to make sure you left access to it from above in case you wanted to change the screen or had a problem with the electric motors if using a motorised one.

Re: Fold down screen - pipe dream?

Thanks for the reply, I think you're probably right, that kind of set up would give me a similar (but more practical) effect.

I'd want an electric screen as I've never had the knack of getting the manual types to retract (mine currently stays unrolled at all times)

Cheers
