Hi, I have noticed a fair few posts about underlay in the DIY section. I am looking to reduce the foot fall noise between floors. So in theory Dreamwalk is 46db and Cumulus is 43db I know that the 3db difference is effectively half volume.
I am trying to find out about the dents made by furniture!!! We have holiday flats and are looking at re-carpeting the building. It would be nice to be able to reduce the foot fall noise between flats as kids do tend to get excited on holiday and run round.
But the problem is that we have sofa beds in the lounges that occasionally get used. They have to be pulled out a bit to use them, so I am worried that the underlay may be so soft that the legs sink in and if someone tries to pull the sofa out may pull the carpet up with it.

Can anyone comment on the amount that furniture sinks in with the above underlays???

The Cloud 9 stuff doesn't seem to suffer retention problems - it's very dense compared to most underlay.

I've got it in every room here.

Cheers Steve. I ended up ordering the Tredaire Dreamwalk as it was 3db better on the noise side of things and they also gave actual measurements for compression tests. Cloud 9 give the same compression specs for all their PU underlay products!!!!
I also spoke to a few suppliers and one or two said they had had a couple of bad rolls of cloud 9 and that sometimes the backing paper isn't attached very well and may make a crinkly sound. I had a couple of samples arrive today and the dreamwalk is slightly denser. Well they are both made from shredded polyurethane foam but the Dreamwalk had some denser bits in. Also after a while of squashing the samples the cloud 9 backing is coming away. The squidging it isnt a normal usage test as it would normally just be walked on and not squidged in my hand, but it does suggest Cloud9's backing isnt stuck on quite as well as the Dreamwalk.

I also have a sample of the Cloud9 contract and it is covered top and bottom by a sort of plactisized layer that is sort of like cling film bonded to the shreaded foam. It does make a noise when compressed but seems very firmly attached. It is quite a bit more dense and harder but the footfall noise reduction is significantly less than either of the the other 2.

It is being fitted on Tuesday so I will post my first impressions then.

I had Cloud9 fitted in my Lounge, Stairs & Landing last week.
I too had the same concerns concerning the backing, the crinkling sound and the retention after furniture had been on it a while.

Obviously i can't comment on the furniture question, but the underlay itself is superb. Cuts out so much sound, is lovely underfoot and certainly isn't making any noise when walked on.

I went for the 9mm.
Our floorboards upstairs were terrible for creaking, it's a fairly newish house and has the chipboard tongue and groove instead of pine floor boards so even the cat could be heard scampering around upstairs.

The tredaire looks just that bit better no?

Bear in mind ive never laid anything like this before. Admitedly ive got laid with many thing as boring and as lifeless

I went with the Tredaire 11mm in the end. Got samples of both and after reading evenrything here simply based my decision on those samples.

The whole house (except kitchen and bathroom!) is done now and I am very happy.

I got mine off flea bay from the seller moortownmill. They've got pretty much all the types that have been discussed on this forum!

From memory, the delivery goes down £1 per roll if you order more than 1 roll.. They do the gripper too, good quality and peanuts compared to what the carpet shop will charge you. Depending on how many grippers you order, they've been helpful in the passed and popped them inside the underlay rolls and not charged carriage on the grippers.
