hi

can some one tell me the best way to run speakers cables to the back of my room for the rear satelite speakers? i intend to have some Modaunt short alumnis.

could have the floor boards up if neccessary as im redecorating. i would also like to have some form of socket so if i move the next person can use them.

If installing a laminate floor you can or should install fibre board which is 5mm thick, so when laying this allow gaps (only big enought for cable) and run the cable in those gaps (you have created a little tunnel for the cables), hold cable down and in place with strong tape. For fitted carpet create gap between underlay and gripper rod, again a little tunnel has been created.
I have used both methods successfully.

I put all my speaker cable in condiut under the plaster. They go up to a standard single gang metal back box, then I put a modifed cover plate which matched the power sockets. I can just about get under my floor and having a small child also helped when running in the cable down there, he thought it was great fun.

Andy: good idea cheers. its laminate so i'lll do that with the underlay.

Beaker: the wall is just a floating wall (lath and plaster) do you wreckon if i drilled a hole big enough i could feed a conduit down to the floor? i can put a back box in there for sure but you men tion a custom plate? can you not buy little 3.5mm face plates? if you cant why not??!! im thnking a normal size single gang is too big.

I have a stud partition wall in my room. It was relatively easy to chase a cable up through the partition to the appropriate level (using a straightened coat hanger to fish it out). I then run the cable round the room next to the skirting board underneath the carpet. I used QED micro cable which should be good enough for rear effects speakers and is easily concealed under carpets.

cheers lazarusr. how did you deal with finishing the hole in the wall? im tempted to use a rubber gromet or sumthing similar. im not too keen on having just a drilled hoel with mastik!

Hi akewt, If you take a look at my post New Living Room with Motorised Wall Mount! you will see we did the exact same thing - used QED Micro cable which we ran under the laminate floor edging trim and then used gromets in the wall where the cables come out.

My speakers wall mount in such a way that they totally conceal the wall behind. So there is just a hole with a wire coming out! I am totally re-doing the set up in my room (see this post) and will put up some pictures of the arrangement with the rear speakers probably next week. In the course of the present works I had considered tidying the hole up but since no one can see, it seems pointless.

I am putting up some pictures (today or tomorrow) of what I am doing with an HDMI cable that may be of interest. Basically using a recessed patress box and then fixing a blank chrome face plate with a hole and a rubber grommet - looks fairly neat

the alumni brackets look pretty small so not sure if i can get away with that.

With my satellites I have mounted them high and hidden the cable behind the ceiling coving.

is this a stereo input? this could be another solution if you wanted to leave the sockets for the next buyer. any thoughts?
