I have an Owl electric screen and need to reduce the size of it by about 4 inches horizontally (2 inches each side) and a corresponding amount top and bottom to retain the 16:9 aspect.

can anyone please advise on what paint I should use (guess it will need to be flexible as it is an electric screen) and also any tips on how to do it to look right and last.

Short of this does anyone know if Owl can take back a screen and do this for me.

Phew! Loads of searching and loads of threads to find this one little snippet.

"as a temp screen i`ve just bought a 6` x 4.5` piece of black out material from my local fabric shop for £8.50 - i also asked about painting it to use as a roller blind and the owner said to use 4 parts paint to 1 part unibond. they also said to water the unibond down slightly first to help it mix nicely. apparently the shop owner does a lot of installations in london, and has a lot of experience so they should be right..."

Just need to pluck up the courage now and do it. Hmmm....

I painted my blackout material grey, with some unibond mixed in, and it seemed pretty flexible to me, but I'm not rolling it up and down loads of times. If you want an offcut to practice with first, PM me - I know it's not the same fabric, but it would give you an idea....

I can tell you that the screen I used was rolled up when not in use and the paint didn't peel or crack off from rolling.

Thanks Rob. BTW, did not mean to quote you without giving fair dues. I'll let you all know how I get on though may be a few weeks before I do it.

One final question, are we talking plain old emulsion with Unibond mixed in or another type of paint.

Hi Messiah - I wasn't having a pop - I just recognised the post is all...... - missed that you posted the orig. question aswell as the second post....


I used dulux ice storm matt emulsion with the unibond.

About to make a fixed screen, and not sure whether to go for 'proper' material, or good ol' fashioned blackout material....

(barco data 800) - maybe need a some gain?

I just got a Frost Auto catalogue and they had some Interior Coat spray for vinyl and leather.
Says it actually penetrates the surface so won't crack off.

I got some 1.2 gain screen material from Ellie (they sell CRTs), and replaced my blackout cloth screen with it.

I'm very pleased with it, and it's better than the blackout cloth (brighter and whiter), although that still represents excellent value if you don't need anything more than around unity gain.
