Me and my Mrs Chimney attempt

Hello, was going to wait till it was done as it may be quite a while till I get the flooring down and the frame plastered but thought I'd show off where we are up to so far

Firstly here is a pic of our nasty old fireplace ...

SO, firstly old fireplace out and hole blocked up ..

Basic frame put up ...

Purchased bracket ...

Made a hole for the bracket ...

And then mounted it ...

Finshed off the frame and mounted the TV ..

Tomorrow we'll be plasterboarding it hopefully , then we can crack on with a new floor etc

Anyways, thanks for looking, any comments welcome

Good to see people are mounting their TV's at a lower-more-on-level-with-their-eyes-when-seated-height in the real world - I'm so tired of seeing picture/mirror height installs on chimney breasts in advertisments and through people's living room windows.

Re: Me and my Mrs Chimney attempt

Done a little bit more today, but got bored and stopped ..

Basically we've plasterboarded around where the TV sits, tomorrow we will do the lower shelf where the centre speaker will sit .. anyhoo , heres a few pictures ..

Just to be on the safe side the we've put holes in the top piece to add extra ventilation ..

Unfortunatley the chimnet doesnt come out as far as the fireplace did so we now have a rather latge patch of missing floor - its only laminate anyway so we'll just start over and do it again

Totally agree, if anything it may be an inch or so higher than I'd prefer it, but I wanted to keep the centre speaker at a reasonable height

Yes, well at leatst it was, kind of is, we paid someone to (corgi registered) to come round and take out the fireplace, that pipe goes into the old fireplace hole and has been capped off

Im unsure of the make, I got it from www.bracketsrus.co.uk, it was 49.99 inc delivery, I wanted something that allowed me to pull the TV out to get to the cables behind it and its worked out really well. I wasn't particularly pleased with the customer service from BRU as I asked for measurements of the bracket and several e-mails were ignored and their site lists no contact telephone number. Also when I ordered it I didnt get any kind of confirmation that it had been ordered or that payment was successful etc.

When I eventually managed to get a tel number for them I spoke to possibly the nicest bloke on the planet and it did turn up within 2 days which was good

Re: Me and my Mrs Chimney attempt

Well we're totally knackered tonight, we've only just finished and its 21:47

We're not your regular DIYers, something of this size of job we'd normally leave to a proffessional. What amuses me most is that I've read through countless DIY projects and thought "is that all they've done". Its quite apparent to me now that this isn't as easy as it looks and is very hard work and is very time consuming.

Anhoo here is some pics of todays work, we got more do than I expected but still quite a way to go...

Firstly we made the box section for the centre speaker, candles, girly bits and bobs etc ...

Then we cracked on makeing the front, this was the bit I was looking forward to the least .....

Mounted the TV and placed the speakers to get an idea of how it will all be when its done ....

Let me know what you think

Coming along nicely, like the speaker stands

Are you going to tape and joint the plasterboard or skim it?

Hi tojo, yes that is the bracket I used, however it would seem that in the last few days its gone up in price as I only paid £49.99 fo it.

Regarding plastering, I have called a local firm to come round and give me a quote, It would seem a shame to make a mess of it now by doing a shoddy platstering job.

Once its done I'll report back and advise how they did it and post up some pics.

Re: Me and my Mrs Chimney attempt

Yay - we have some progress

Finally fitted the top piece to complete the chimney ..

And the plasterer has been and done a wonderful job..

Mounted TV

This gives you a nice idea why I opted for the bracket I did, I can nicely get to the cables behind the TV ...

So here we are looking somewhere near close to

Next I have to put coving around the top to match up to the ceiling.

In an attempt to save money we've decided to pinch the flooring from the downstairs loo to finish off the living room, then we'll tile the downstairs loo which will be much cheaper than buying a whole new wood floor.

You'll see that the centre speaker is missing at the momnet because the plaster is drying , but obviously once its dry and painted it will sit on the shelf under the TV

One thing I forgot to mention to anyone who is chosing the same bracket as I used, whilst there is a variety of fixings supplied with it, I binned them and used Heavy Duty fixings like the ones in the below link ...

I think that they're really good, the Subwoofer is really powerful - I've had them for 2 years now and have been really happy with them.

just a thought
if you fold the inner arms outwards, if poss, instead of them folding to the middle will the tv sit closer to the wall?

Nice cat!

I really like your idea - I think it's better than the floating wall idea. Did you consider putting some lighting behind the TV?

My only problem is that my center speaker is a foot deep and the bass reflex hole is in the back of the speaker - not sure what affect having it in a hole would have although the Pioneer amp should correct most of the sound problems it might cause....

Although I can and have done some plastering, I would have probably made it from MDF - we will probably wall paper ours...

I have two persions and the grey one featured in that pic always manages to get in to at least one them

I dont know how they'll come out, but I've taken some pics of the ikea LED strip lights that I've used behinf the TV

I cant take any credit for any of the ideas really, mostly I've just been lurking on here pinching ideas off others, however I do appear to have put the TV at a much lower height than many others. I cant imagine it being any higher, I'd be looking up at it all the time and I dont think I'd like that.
