Question Plasterboard with no joists - LCD tv

Good morning,

I'm new to the forum and would like some advice on putting up a 42" LCD TV on the wall.

The property I'm in is a new build. Construction: Block, 7cm polystyrene insulation, 27cm cavity then finally plasterboard.
The plasterboard is attached to stainless steel frames which seem to be very thin.

Can the weight of an LCD screen be placed solely on the brackets and fittings??? It will not be possible to use the steel joists!

Can anyone help?

Regards,
Mike

I would say that you need to attach the bracket to the vertical studs (galvanised steel frame, I doubt its stainless but it may be) I dont think that plaster board is capable of holding a 42" plasma no matter what type of fixings you use. You need the additional strength of the vertical studs.

Re: Plasterboard with no joists - LCD tv

Welcome to the Forums.

Last year I helped put up a mates set (42" plasma) on a similar wall construction. His bracket had lots of holes on the plate (over 20) and we ended up using a combination of 8 long anchor bolts into the block and every other hole was some wicked little plasterboard anchors that are a real pain to install but are really good.

It's still up and was a lot less work than my original advice to him to make a timber frame and hang the telly on that. Mind you if he'd have done that I wouldn't have to look at his cabling every time I'm round his place.

If he'd had the bracket that mine has got with only 6 holes on it then I'd have refused to have fitted it that way.

It sounds like a gyp liner system

Fixing into the galvanised vertical studs should be fine

Thumbs up Re: Plasterboard with no joists - LCD tv

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice. I have used those hollow wall anchors before. I was unsure if they could bear the weight of a TV.
I will buy a bracket that has plenty of holes.

I think the steel frame is accessible. How do you think I secure to this?

Now all I have to is buy a TV and bracket.

Thanks,
Mike

Get the proper dry-wall screws (black) for fixing to the metal stud.
Dont use wall anchors if you have a large cavity as when you tighten them you'll pull the plasterboard in and crack it - bugger it up!
