Advice on mounting 42" Flatscreen on Plasterboard

Hi all,

first time post here and i would love some feedback on mounting my 42" philips on a plasterboard wall that does have wooden battons running down it every 1m.

I've attached a photo of what im planning to do (no laughing at my excellent drawing in paint!....)

My flatscreen is a Philips 42PF5521D and basically i want to mount the flatscreen in the center of the wall using the following bracket (http://www.directtvs.co.uk/Raw_Inter...F1/version.asp) hopefully finding 2 good fixing's in the wooden battons for the flatscreen bracket (what screws/bolts have people found best for this?) and then get a good 6-8 fixing's in the plasterboard (using something like this http://www.screwfix.com/prods/38777/Fixings/Cavity-Fixings/Metal-Plasterboard-Anchor-4x46S)

i need to chase the cables from (when you looking at the photo i attached) the left hand side red box to the one in the center of the wall. tracing cable option 1 (green line) is the shortest distance to where trace back being 2.6m and tracing cable option 2 (yellow line) is 4m (roughly) - I would like to get your thoughts on this and the best way i could do it, bearing in mind that the is a wooden batton running every 1m or so, would you suggest cutting out the plasterboard and putting the cables in some kind of trunking then plasterning back over the top??? to be honest this is the only bit im slightly worried about so any feedback would be great.

On to the electrical side of things i current have
SKY+
Xbox360
VHS/DVD player
-Looking to get in the near future,
surround sound
SKY HD

and what im thinking of doing is future proofing it all by running all the necessary cables through when i trace to start of with. So take through,
2x 3m scart cables (for VHS/DVD and SKY+)
2x HDMI 3m cables (for SKY HD and anything HD in the future)
1x DVi audio input 3m cable (to go with anything HDMI)
1x component video/audio inputs (for XBOX360 running in HD)
1x TV aerail
1x 3M power cable

Guys thanks for any feedback on this as i know this is a long post...

cheers

Will

Re: Advice on mounting 42" Flatscreen on Plasterboard

Hi Will

welcome to the forums

the first thing I would do is take a look here for your plasma bracket

http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/Audio,+Vi...sp?sku=ST01139

and these for the plaster board fixings

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/34215/...ing-50mm-100Pk

I have used both and found them to be very good

you seem to have all the angles covered regarding the install and don`t be frightened when cutting out for truncking in the wall but my advice is to make sure that you are able to get all the cables through and future ones as well

cheers and good luck

Allan

Its generally not a good idea to run cables diagonally. Is that an old gas pipe by the skirting board?

As for chasing the cables if it is plasterboard then you might be able just to thread them down till you hit a horizontal piece of wood (Noggin) then chisel a small piece of plaster board out to get at the noggin and cut a notch in that. that way you only have a small hole to fill. As for the mounting on plaster board be VERY careful. I take it you havent got breeze block or bricks behind the plasterboard have you???

Re: Advice on mounting 42" Flatscreen on Plasterboard

The plaster board fixings that albriscoe mentioned can support up to 75kg, is your plasterboard walls single or double layered ?

if you have double plan then putting enough Self Drilling Plasterboard Fixings in to the supported LCD bracket would do the trick, but if you have single layered plasterboard then its a little tricky...

Re: Advice on mounting 42" Flatscreen on Plasterboard

Hi. Joining this one late but here's my two penneth...

Look at this bracket also at 32mm thick http://www.m-formonline.co.uk/index....mart&Itemid=26. We would ALWAYS recommend that you try to get at least one wooden stud into your fixing points for the bracket however many plasterboard fixings you use. If this isn't possible then put some battons up first. You can cut away the plasterboard where your battons go to reduce the effect of the extra thickness.

Re: Advice on mounting 42" Flatscreen on Plasterboard

i have had a similar problem recently.the way i got round it was to fit a 19mm ply to span across three studs and fix them securleyto the studs then strap the wall with 2x1 dressed then plasterboard the wall.by doing this it allows you to put all the cables behind the sheets.once i work out how to post pics i will do so.

yes it is an old gas pipe but it is not in use any more.

not a bad idea to chase the cables along then just chiseling out around the noggins.

Yes i believe there is brick or breeze block an inch or 2 behind the plasterboard.

any ideas how to bring that in to the equation?

thanks

Re: Advice on mounting 42" Flatscreen on Plasterboard

Hi. If this is a fairly modern house then the studs (or noggins) in the wall will only run vertically and there won't be any horizintal ones so you should be able to drop the cables straight down.

One thing you could consider is to cut away a rectangle of the plasterboard to fit the bracket into and mount the bracket directly to the brick behind. This way you can completely lose the depth of the bracket into the wall. Doing it this way you could also consider getting a cantilever bracket as the extra depth would be lost in the cavity. Just a thought...
