mounting projection screen - help please!!

Hi...

after a bit of advice on mounting my projector screen, basically i do not have the original fixing mounts that would have come with the screen, and i need to mount it (either fixed to wall or ceiling) with enough distance from the wall so that the screen comes down (just) infront of the plasma when needed

i had a look in the loft above and the first ceiling joist would be over a foot away from the wall which is too far,

what is the best way for me to do this?

any advice much appreciated

Can you fix 2 battens on the top of the current joists at 90 degrees, or even better cut a notch into the joists and recess the battens in (that will stop lateral slippage)? Then hang the screen off these battens?

[This advice does not offer any guarantee and I am not a professional builder ]

I would resist notching joists as it will make them weaker. You can but Joist Hangers from B&Q or screwfix. Not sure if that image will work, if not you can search screwfix for 'joist hanger'. They come in different sizes to suit the current joists. Then you add a new piece of joist or just some 50x50 timber to the new joist holders. Its a little over the top but its better to be safe than sorry. They are only about £2.65 each so only cost about £13 including timber and screws to make 2 decent fixings for the screen. You could also use Speedy hangers (screwfix search) I guess B&Q or another decent DIY shop would sell them.

I once made the mistake of not doing a proper job on hanging a screen, only to have it jump from its mountings and land directly on my Sky box. Result 1 crushed Sky box and 1 bent screen!!!!!

So dont use any hooks, make sure you use eye fittings with d shackles. Make sure the screen cannot under any circumstances come off the mounts. Bass has a habit of vibrating thinks loose!!

PS I'm not a builder but I have a damaged sky box and a slightly bent screen because I used 'S' hooks!!!

Re: mounting projection screen - help please!!

i decided it would be best to get the original mounts ordered... from belgium

they are finally here so im going to attempt to put it up today... was planning on making 2 new battens at 90 degree angles from the original joists using joist hangers, then fix the screen through the ceiling into these new joists.

can anybody think of anything i need to know before i start?

AGHHHHHH!!!!

Nightmare.............

just took the new brackets out of the box and they are the wrong ones! seems as thought there is a newer version of the same named screen and i have the brackets for the new one which wont fit!

so.... looks like im going to have to go for the same plan but with hooks instead of original fixings!

£20 wasted there then

should this still be strong enough? the friend helping me sugested hoks that wil go all the way through the new joists and bolt on the other side does this seem about right?

also means no room for error now in terms of placement!
