One thing to consider if you are building a proper brick wall is the floor. That may sound silly but depending on which way the joists go your new wall could just be supported on 20mm chipboard!!!!!!! If the joists go at 90 degrees to the new wall then I would still try and get a lintle to go at the bottom to make sure the load is spread across the joists.
I think scott R's idea of brick slips is the safest. Remember if you are mounting a plasma to the wall it sould be a good strong wall. If the wall is plasterboard ten you need good fixings into the vertical stud work.
