nearly finished the mdf units im building, but there are a few drill holes and some slight gaps along the edges near the walls due to the walls being out.

is there some sort of filler based on being used on mdf at all? i would prefer one that i could use in a gun so i can run it along the edges, i dont really want to be filling the gaps in with a pointing tool if i can help it.

i want to use some filler which i can paint over either with paint or varnish so i dont want to se any of the filler showing.

any advice?

Take a handful of MDF dust and mix with PVA glue, then sand flat once hardened. The worlds best filler.

No need for a gun, just use a filler knife and a wetted finger.

P38 car filler appears to be a good. It has got good attraction in diy subwoofers forum.

Hi,

For the screw holes I'd simply use polyfilla - not the ready mixed type as this sets too hard and can be difficult to sand down, jusat use the powder you mix yourself. You will get a good finish on MDF with this.

For the gaps against the wall I'd use decorator's caulk. This is applied with a mastic gun, and you can run a flat blade filler knife down it to get a flat finish with the units. This sets to a flexible finish, so you don't get cracks forming over time. Caulk can be painted over - don't use silicon for this sort of application, as you can't paint over that!

I agree with what MarkP says. decorators caulk is simple to use and using a damp cloth or a wet finger wipes away to leave the crack or gap filled perfectly. Try to cut the nozzle on the end of the tube when its in the gun, at an angle that you will be holding the gun at, also try to cut the end of the nozzle the same size as the gap you`re wanting to fill, it saves a lot of waste as well this way.
