Hiya guys,

I'm sorry if this has been covered in a thread, if it has please linky me. I dont get much chance to be online nowadays due to my new job hence I havnt been able to do a lot of searching...lol

I'd like to mount my Infocus 7205 to the ceiling in my room to get it off the floorstand where its in the way now. I like the look of one of the Vogels mounts, its a simple affair with a simple tubular look where it attaches to the ceiling.....according to the installation instructions it would simply be a case of two screws going through the ceiling in to a wooden beam above in the loft (bedroom location here btw, not downstairs). Questions are....

1) Is there any way to locate the beams without going in to the loft as its not very nice up there and lots of crap in the way...lol. Prefer not to simply drill lots of holes and hope...

2) Will those two screws happily hold the projector there safely?...i'm guessing the beams quality of wood comes in to the factor mainly, its a 1930's Harrow, NW London semi detached build, so most stuff was very good quality. I'm more worried about the fact that my SVS PB12+ subwoofer sometimes pressurises the room rather dramatically and dont want the screws to work loose.....the installation guide shows using plugs in a concrete type ceiling installation, but not for wood, im guessing in wood they would bite ok and shouldnt work loose unless the beams rotton....

Well, I appreciate any help anyone can offer on this, I kinda figure what the likely answers will be, but its always nice to get some confirmation on things before going ahead with something like this...lol

Look at argos site they do a stud/wire detector does wood too. Under DIY tools. Hope this helps.

Drill and pilot bit .. simple but very effective. Takes around 5 mins to tidy up all your near misses as well.

Once the mount is screwed in, it wont come back out until you want it to but you wil have a first sleepless night waiting for a loud crash !!!!

Your light fitting should also give you a good idea of where the beams are as it's usually screwed into one of them. I couldn't line up the projector with the screen properly with the mount screwed to one of the beams so I screwed a piece of wood between two beams and bolted the projector to that.

that's the best way to find beams (you can find screws that holds plasterboard, but that may not give you exact location of stud, you know builders ).

I had the same reservations about using the screws supplied with the Vogel's mount so in the end I just copied what this guy did:

Projector installed + DRH screen

It means you'll have to brave the attic but your PJ will be rock solid.

The easiest and best way is to mark the holes on the ceiling where you want to mount the bracket. Then use a small screwdriver and gently push it through the plasterboard where you marked the for the screws (dont drill through as there could be pipes or wires above)
Then go up in to your loft and find the holes. Then fit a nogging (4x2, 3x2 etc) inbetween the joists. Cut it a tight fit then fix it with screws or nail.
Then go back in to your bedroom and fix the bracket up with the screws in to a nice solid piece of hidden timber...

Hi,

I'm going to need to screw my ceiling mount up too, but the room is my lounge, and above it the flooring is laminated so I can't take it up! :-(

What do you think the best thing to do is, are there any specialist ceiling plugs?

you wouldnt want to take the chance of plasterborad keeping it in the air !!!!! , proper plasterbord plugs or not

fair point, I'm pretty stuck though I guess. I need to find out where the beams are then, can't see any nails though

I used to have my projector on a vogel mount in the ceiling of my last house .

as has been suggested get a stud detector then use a 3-4mm pilot drill to check you have a joist ( if you have the drill wont just disappear into the ceiling and you should get some wood shaving out as well) then open the holes out using a drill 2-3mm smaller than the supplied screws and just screw the mount to the centre of the beam using the nut head screws supplied

the supplied srews are way over kill so you can be sure it will stay there
