My new lounge / entertainment unit

Hi All
After buying a new flat I decided to look here for inspiration to design the layout for my new TV system, I wanted something clean but with enough storage to hold our collection of dvd's and cd's. In the end we have decided to go for the ikea besta units in Black/Brown, with a cabinet to hold all the AV equipment (frosted glass door means the remotes work through it), two cabinets with 5 drawers each, using the dvd drawer mats ikea provide 8 drawers will be used for dvd's and 2 for cd's.
So far I have assembled 2 of the units (pics to follow) but as ikea in wembley were out of stock on the tv unit and didn't have enough drawers I haven't bothered to build the rest yet (that and we only finished moving on Tuesday).
anyways enough babble I'll make with the pictures

What we started with

First day TV viewing (dvd only as sky had not been hooked up)

Will take some more tonight with the cabinet progress.

Re: My new lounge / entertainment unit

Well the shelving units are built and so far it seems ok, unfortunately IKEA are out of stock on the drawers for the dvd's so at the moment they are just sitting on the shelves. 4 weeks wait apparently. The cabinet to the left with the frosted glass door holds the dvd, sky hd, PS2, Xbox 360, and will eventually also hold the TVIX.
the units so far:

Re: My new lounge / entertainment unit

Save one drawer and 2 shelves for me!

Ikea in MK were quoted approx 3 weeks about 10 days ok.

I've got the reference numbers so that I can ring them to check availability before I go up there - I'll post them on here if it will save you a trip to your local store?

Such a pain that you can't pre order stuff from them!

Re: My new lounge / entertainment unit

That would be great if you can post when they are back in stock, I phoned Wembley on Friday and they said 4 weeks...
I've just realised how small the TV looks in that space...need to start working out how to convince the missus that we need a bigger TV.

Re: My new lounge / entertainment unit

will take some tonight, the cabling inside is messy as hell at the momenth though, list of things still to do:

extend power cables on wireless rear speakers
mount rear speakers
trunk cables from rears to power
cable fronts, centre and sub
Clean up cables in equipment cab
trunk cables at the back of the equipment cab
attach LED lighting in cab (if anyone knows how to change colours ont he IKEA dioder let me know pls...white LED sucks the balls)

got to do all this while ensuring at no stage do I miss the rugby, it's going to be a great weekend!

quick poll:
Should I wall mount the LCD?

the equipment in the cab (obviously it needs tidying), the plan is to get a Tvix in next to the 360:

Re: My new lounge / entertainment unit

If you leave your 360 like that, you'll have the 3 red rings in no time.

Re: My new lounge / entertainment unit

I presume he's referring to an apparent lack of ventilation for the 360. Most 3RL errors on the 360 are as a result of overheating that causes problems for the boards.

Re: My new lounge / entertainment unit

the rumour is that if you leave them upright the heat all passes the board and builds towards the top warping the circuit board where as if its laying down the heat rises to the top of the case and allows the board to heat evenly

makes mechanical sense but theres a lot of wifes tales out there about the red ring of death.

Re: My new lounge / entertainment unit

I've had it upright since I got it (ooer) and not a problem yet, there are ventilation holes drilled behind the unit and as it's not in all that often I don't foresee any overheating issues. I'll keep an eye on it and if needs be I'll hook up a fan at the rear of the cab, but for now it's allllll good! :D
