my lounge with progress pix Now More pix

Hi

after lurking on this forum for a long time i finally decided to go for it
and mount my tv on a false was wall and i thought i would share my progress
with you guys.
Room before:

My 1st thought was to build a false chimney around where the fireplace is,(the dodgy coloured wall with ramdon white paint on was wallpapered which we have removed) but because the wooden floor is already laid the chimney breast would of had to come out as far as the hearth is to cover the hole in flooring, I (or the wife) didnt want this as we felt it would inpead to much into the
room.
i thought why not put a wall across this corner of the room:

I searched the forum to see if this had been done (without success) i really wanted to see and end result beforehand.
then i went through more thought about what the best layout would be and i finally deceded to bite the bullet and went for the corner option the following pix are my progress:
Height test for the screen:

Frame work built across the corner:

close up of tv bracket - i'm going for the recessed look hence the bracket being set back from the front of the wall

first hang of the tv to see what it was like:

then i built the frame work for the recess under the tv and put the 1st plasterboard up-the tv was put up afterwards i to check the cut out i made in the board

plasterboard completed with metal edging strip for the sharp edge and shelf in place in recess - this is removable so i can gain acess the plugs which will be underneath

More to follow!

Re: my lounge with progress pix

Good on you mate. Glad to see someone attempt the corner option as I've thought about that route as well. Not all living rooms are ideal for the conventional 'TV-wall'. Keep up the good work and post lots of pics.

I take it you had to mitre cut the timber battens for the front face of the construction?

Re: my lounge with progress pix

I too thought about having a corner install and yours looks like it'll work well in the room. After all, if you think about the space that a floor unit takes up then it makes no odds as to blanking out one corner. Also as your shelf is removable it looks like there's plenty of room to have equipment underneath it hidden away, which is always a nice option to have.

Re: my lounge with progress pix

looks real good red, been looking for an corner design like this for ages.

can you tell me though, where have you got your power outlets, phone line (if you have one) and tv etc

think i need to build a hidden compartment below the AV compartment for the power sockets etc.

and what type of lights have you behind the TV?

Re: my lounge with progress pix

Interesting thread and idea. Looking forward to seeing the final pics. Hope you removed the Plasma before having it plastered..

Mind if i ask a question? Intrigued by your framework. I note that you put the initial frame in first then put battens in to fill it out. Were the battens connected to the main frame by countersunk screws or did you nail them in at an angle? Is it all very sturdy?

Looking real good. As suggested by Elootas it may be a good idea to try and throw some of the uglier equipment in behind the framework and put in an ir. eye for communication. Where are you planning to store your equipment?

Keep the pics coming.

Very nice! Like the red and the contrast with the white behind the TV and yours looks different as you've still got the fireplace as a focal point. Well done!

Re: my lounge with progress pix

I've not seen a setup like that before... very nice

So was the bracket already up when the false wall was plastered? I bought a bracket from eBay, and wondered if I should mount it before have the room skimmed. Otherwise I might have trouble finding the studs to hang the bracket on

Re: my lounge with progress pix

I have been wanting my rear projection to die as the fact it is perfectly useable is the only reason I have not forked out on a new plasma/lcd but I have had this design to do in mind since the summer The Xmas sales are gonna kill me I can tell so watch this space for another corner project, oh & a RP for sale
I was however going to have an open compartment at the bottom like a fireplace with arched top & glass shelving inside. This would then allow me to slide them out, crawl in behind and then stand up.
Currently my RP sits across the corner with the sub behind and that works very well. Would it work in this same idea anyone???

Hi

I am about to embark on a corner design, 1st question is how did you determine where the TV and shelf went? Any sizes etc...

I will throw the uglier equipment behind the framework and put in an ir. eye for communication, where did you get the white plastic back plate from?

Many thanks in advance

Re: my lounge with progress pix

An excellent thread mate.

It's an ideal solution to all those people who don't have rooms suited to a TV wall as someone said earlier in the thread.

This is exactly the sort of thing I love about the board.

Well done.

npjhome - if you mean the thing at the top of this photo

you can get them at a number of electrical retailers, link below is just one of many places selling them (e.g. I think Screwfix Direct do them)

I used similar ones from RS. They're deigned for cabinet access but are quite large and allow for easy access. They're also a bit cheaper!
