Another fake chimney project... just in case there weren't enough.

Hi All,

Here's my little false chimney project:

Construction Photos

We're just finishing off the decorating, and just need to wire everything up, so more photos to come as this completes...

The construction was more GSI than DIY, as my cousin did the work to my Google SketchUp plans (you can see them on the wall in the photos!).

I wonder if anyone can guess which design I copied based this on?

Anyhow, hope this is interesting to someone, if so I'll post more later...

Andy

Looking good. Are you going to leave space for a centre speaker though? Quick question if I may, what are you using to fireproof the fire area?

As for who's project, I'm going for KeyJade.

Tojo,

The area at the bottom is simply a decorative recess so, no fire. However, concealed within the recess is the centre speaker - pointing downwards. It will be lit with LED lights.

Looking Good mate, keeps us all posted......can I pick your Brain; how did you do the coving? The last time I did some coving it was a pain trying CALCULATE the Angles for the corners as it's curved; do you have a special jig / tool?

Re: Another fake chimney project... just in case there weren't enough.

Nope, it was based on mountfords's design.

I raised the TV area slightly to allow the centre speaker to be located between the two recesses - wife friendly (i.e. hidden) - pointing downwards.

Hi mate quick question, by using jointing tape did you refrain from needing to plaster, because if so, must say you got a good result.

Re: Another fake chimney project... just in case there weren't enough.

Hi N42,

No plaster. We just used joint compound and tape. Once this was smooth we put a base coat of slightly watered down Dulux Trade Matt on it. This showed any areas that needed attention and for these we used Polyfilla One-Fill - the very, very light stuff.

Here are some more photos from this weekend... almost done now!

Re: Another fake chimney project... just in case there weren't enough.

Andy,

Excellent job, well done, and plenty of inspiration for my own similar job. Just one question - could I ask where you got the colour-changing LED lights from? I've seen a couple of outdoor sets (looked a bit big) but very little choice for indoor use.

CaptainFlash,

Apologies for my late reply - been away for a few days...

The LEDs are the superb remote controlled Apollo lights from Noodleman, see his thread:

Dean,

The bottom section will be for wife ornamental use

My wife also has plans for the shelves Seriously though, we needed more space for books, CDs etc... We're trying not to clutter them.

I'll post some more piccies shortly...

Andy
