Fireplace - utilise,remove or hide?

Hi all,
I am just about to start the hc project in the front room of the house we moved in to last year. I purposely didn't want to start the install right away as I wanted time to get use to the fireplace, see pic (it's a large pic - sorry couldn't resize it): Fireplace

But I still can't make up my mind what to do with it and I would value your views, comments or suggestions, please.

It may be possible to take one layer of bricks out of the middle above the wooden lintel and install the plasma screen there, maybe get rid of the fire all together and install the av kit in it's place.

I am bad at visualising all this as I have no artistic flare at all - I work in IT

I want to make the room look reasonable modern with down lights and ceiling speakers rather than have the hanging down lights. And I want to keep the floor standing Castle Avon speakers.

So what do you think, should I use it, loose it, or hide it behind a baton created normal looking chimney breast????

help and thanks

If I were you keep the fireplace it gives character, use the recess for source equipment and feed all leads to panel via the stack. You could use concealed lighting in the fireplace for a bit of drama.

Xantech, I think you're probably right and that's the way to go. As you say it will keep the character and it's kinda unique - thanks
