Fireplace > Media-Centre conversion...

This month, after years of renting, we finally purchased our first place.

It's a ground floor mais with a working fireplace/chimney.

What I'm thinking about is putting the 40W2000 above the fireplace opening, and converting the fireplace as a space for consoles/dvd etc. Put some soft lighting in it, drill behind the TV and feed the wiring down the chimney to the media systems at the bottom in the converted space.

Anyone know of any similar projects? Just had a quick search but didn't find much.

Re: Fireplace > Media-Centre conversion...

Hi there.

I would strongly suggest NOT drilling into the chimney flue to pass cables etc, as this can cause serious problems with pre cast style flues, clay pipe flues etc that crack easily. even though you may not use the chimney for a fire, if you move, the next person may, and then have gases escaping into the room through the cracks and surface palster.

One idea I gave someone some time ago who had the same idea as you, was to attach some wooden battens to the breast, and then screw on plasterboard to make a new breast face, and your cables can be passed up between the void of the old breast face, and the plasterboard. This way you can also flush mount your screen. I have done this the exact same way, and the look is very cool.

Best not to start messing with the flue tho mate.

Re: Fireplace > Media-Centre conversion...

the general advise has always been never hang a plasma on a Chimley as the brickwork is usally fire damaged due to its very nature not to mention the morter courses. If your really keen make sure you use a mount with a large spreader plate attached to the wall or if you have a chimley with a lage opening you may be able to drill through and put large washers/load spread plates on the back and bolt it there.

BTW

I flu issue can some times be seen if you look up he chimley ( with a torch ) as a rule of thumb if its a round opening its lined Dont drill it best case is its clay worse case is its Aspestos both will crack. if its a metal liner then best of luck getting a hole in it after drilling the wall infront of it

Re: Fireplace > Media-Centre conversion...

Our builder had no issues at all with the plasma on the fire place and we have two holes for the cables to go through - more than happy with it and when we move I will hang my plasma on the fireplace again.

Re: Fireplace > Media-Centre conversion...

in the process of decorating my bedroom and im thinkin of doing the same.

ive got this as my inspiration:

Finally got our Hitachi on the wall, see what you think

looks fairly straight forward! although with my DIY skills it will more than likely prove a challenge. i was wondering, the project shows a false back and floor, but what about the 'top', it'll be blocked off somehow, wont it?
