hanging 43" pioneer on plaster board

hi

i wanted to hear opinions on an install job i have just done with a friend.

Yesterday, I screwed this tilt mount (http://www.avrabbit.com/product-AVR-...mount-416.html) to a plasterboard wall, and then mounted a 43" pioneer to it.

We screwed metal screw fittings into the wall (14 in total, 7 up and 7 down across a say 20" rectangle), then mounted the mount in line with these fittings (now in the wall), we secured the mount using metal screws and washers across all 14 points.

We then hung the telly on the mount.

We tried to find stud boards, but the stud detector was unreliable. But we probably found wood in 3 additional screws that we just added at the end (on top of the 14) for more hold.

My friend has also mounted a 32" (i think) to a plaster board wall (without securing to stud) and its been up nearly a year. Mine's a lot heavier i am sure (pioneerd pdp435pe, 43").

What are your thoughts?

Re: hanging 43" pioneer on plaster board

In my opinion (as the installer) its a secure mounting and will not let you down..

It would be better if we had hit the wooden studs but your house seems to be built from plasterboard only...

My 40" sony has been hanging since february 2007 and it was mounted in exactly the same method as yours...

Dont lose too much sleep dude but tread softly near that wall and dont slam the door too hard!!

Re: hanging 43" pioneer on plaster board

Plasterboard is strong, provided it is fixed to reasonably narrowly spaced battens (max 60cm). I have hung several 48Kg radiators with no problems.

Make sure the force is shear, down the plasterboard, and not a pull load. ie avoid having sexy mounts that allow the load to swing away from the wall/mountings.

Re: hanging 43" pioneer on plaster board

Slightly on a tangent but hopefully you guys may be able to help me.

I live in a modern flat with one of the internal walls being made of plasterboard. It already has a double radiator on it.

I was previously thinking about putting a small shelf on the wall to place my projector on.

How do i find out how close the battens are?

I guess the shelf's weight would not be exclusively downwards and so similar to a swing mounting (i guess) and does this mean it would not be adviseable?

stevos, my projector is placed on a shelf which is just attached to plasterboard and not the joists. I used four plasterboard anchors and the shelf feels solid and has held my projector up for 18 months now.

I know absolutely nothing about DIY, which is something i am normally quiet proud of.

As such i have no idea what a plasterboard anchors is. Do you have any links to a picture of one?

Cheers
Steve.

Re: hanging 43" pioneer on plaster board

Thanks.

I put up a coat rail with 2 of something similar to that, and it came down after a coule of months. As such I not too confident about the wall taking the weight of a projector.

Re: hanging 43" pioneer on plaster board

Cheers.

Luckly it turned out the wall with the coat rail had breezeblock in between the plasterboard with a large gap either side. So it is now nice an secure.

However no breezeblock on the projector wall.

I guess i will need to decide if i want to take the gamble or not.

Re: hanging 43" pioneer on plaster board

Steve
The fixings I recommended hold up my kitchen cupboards full of plates and cookery books etc.

I put my kitchen in around 10 years ago and it hasnt moved.

I also have several radiators held on with them.

The fixings recommended by the other guy are fine too I have used them myself but prefer the reddidriva.

Like anything else you need to install them carefully ie dont bash them into the board drill anice clean maybe 7mm hole to scre them into so as they are holding on firm board not split board and if they bottom out DONT use them as thy have lost their strength.

Personally I would put a shelf up for a projector with 100% confidence using them.

Regards

Steve

Re: hanging 43" pioneer on plaster board

The corkscrew fixings work well however if you are worried, head to Screwfix website and search for 'toggler'. These fixings are by far the best (in my humble opinion!!) for plasterboard.

You will have to order the screws seperately though.....

What have you used to attached your AV gear to the wall? It looks very neat and tidy.

Perhaps you should leave the mounting to somebody else in that case!! I've used those fixings for various applications, although admittedly nothing too heavy and they have worked a treat. You can buy stud locators in b&q or screwfix, I think they are about £20ish. Or if you tap your knuckle along the wall you should be able to hear a change in sound when you are at a stud. They are normally between 400 and 600mm apart.

umpah used gear he bought from avrabbit.com.... he used a mount that has not tilt or swivel, just a basic mount that is flush against the wall... my mount is a 15 degree tilt, although my tilt is quite minimal .. worried there would be too much downward force with more tilt !

Re: hanging 43" pioneer on plaster board

Im about to hang a 40" sammy using these:
http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/...33559&ts=85621

How many should I use and how far to space apart?

Also, think it may hit two studs on the way..
