loft insulation or green slabs

hi just about the soundproof the ceiling the wall was done 6 months ago.
the problem i face is the 2 young babies cant really rip up the floor boards to add insulation and cant really rip the ceiling down to add insulation because of the mess it will make. so to answer my question can i just add the green slabs up to the ceiling then add the 2 layers of pb with greenglue, or do i just bite the bullet rip the ceiling down add the insulation furring strips then pb with greenglue

Re: loft insulation or green slabs

Hi there

I'm no expert on sound insulation, but can still offer an opinion. In my view, it's rarely worth taking a short cut. I always find it best to bite the bullet, do a job properly, then sit back satisfied I know it's done right. The short term hassle will be worth it, IMHO.

I'm not familiar with the slabs you describe, but if I had to go down the false ceiling route, I would be looking at fastening battens through the ceiling to the existing ones. I would then use these battens to screw the new pb to. Any insulation would go in the gap between the battens. Of course, the battens themselves will transmit sound to some extent, but I would accept that for the fixing this gives.

Unless I'm barking up the wrong tree - is gluing the green slabs to the ceiling then gluing pb to the slabs really ok? I'm sure an expert will advise.

As I say though, I'd personally bite the bullet....

Cheers,
MarkP

Re: loft insulation or green slabs

sorry mate i'm a bit confused, the way you have asked your question it sounds like you want to stick the slabs to the existing ceiling then stick the plasterboard to the slabs. if this is the case then no you cant, it will never hold. As markp80 said you should batton to the existing ceiling then insulate then plasterboard or remove the ceiling and do it that way.

Re: loft insulation or green slabs

right so you want to stick the slabs to the original ceiling then screw the p/b through to the existing joists

Re: loft insulation or green slabs

Ah, I see now. I was thinking something 100mm thick or so...

Then you can get slightly longer pb screws and fix as you plan, and you won't lose much ceiling height. Not sure how effective the soundproofing would be though.

yeah me too:

sorry mate shouldn't have a problem doing it with them, if possible put a mark on your walls first where all your joists are this will be easier when you come to screw your p/b up

Re: loft insulation or green slabs

Why not just take down enough of your existing ceiling at one end to slide the green boards between existing joists may have to cut the odd access hole for adjustment but it will save on materials and mess.
