Re: M D F painting

You can use car paint on MDF with no problems. Acrylic spray cans (standard Halfords) work well, although it might get expensive for a big cabinet. Might be better to hire a spray gun, and buy a tin of white base (and the appropriate thinners) from an automotive refinishing supplier.

Car primer will work OK, too, although you can get specialised MDF primer from B&Q, IIRC. Pay particular attention to the "end grain" of cut boards, as this area will need extra sealing - the cut ends are very porous. If you don't seal them properly, you'll get a matt finish.

My brother made some house signs from MDF. He sprayed them with cellulose primer and colour, airbrushed the lettering, then sealed them with 2-pack laquer. They've been outside for 5 years, and are in perfect condition.

is there any way to get a really good gloss finish? Would using a spray help with that? Can you clearcoat MDF?

Hi,

Have been reading on DIY screens for Front Projection and some say that MDF's can warp , what if it is in a room and not outdoors, will it still warp?

Am thinkin of getting de goo systems paints and doing up either an mdf or plywood as a screen, is this feasible?

Sorry total noob in this...

Thanks for reading

If you are good with a spraygun, you can achieve a perfect glasslike finish. Automotive clearcoat can take a much better finish than DIY varnish/laquer.

With the correct equipment, and good preparation, you can get a perfect finish "straight from the gun" if you use 2-pack clearcoat. Acrylic or cellulose will need a bit of flatting/compounding.

mdf doesnt warp as far as i know of have a look at this and see for yourself,
http://www.merbok.com/mdfoverview/whatis.htm

u can get 18mm mdf which is quite thick, not sure if u can get bigger thickness than that or not, not sure about plywood sizes.
wickes have thick mdf in this link too.

im going to build my units in my bedroom in mdf and im going to use b and qs paint and grain u put the base coat on and then the grain coat then u buy a varnish probably clear, and give it a couple of coats, u can get different colours in paint and grain too, have a look.
http://www.ronseal.ie/prodshowgroup....in&intext=int#
click on colours next to add to shopping for a choice.
it even has a guide on here of how to use it.
hope this info helps and if u do use it i would like to see the result if u could show a pic.
