LCD tv positioning for newcomer.???

We are about to start a project of installing a new 46" LCD tv with 5.1 surround system.

We had thought of the Sharp Aquos TV matched to our current Marantz
SR4200 AV Surround Receiver and Yamaha DVD-S520. Whether we go for a cable decoder or Sky+ has also yet to be decided.

Currently our tv set and equipment sit in a corner, but I had thought of installing the tv above a stone fireplace on the long exterior wall. Viewing would then be from approx 3.5 m directly opposite, and cabling would be buried etc. The fireplace has a gas fire which is used only occassionally.

We have heard various reports of disasters of tv's above fireplaces due to heat, and that it is too high for comfortable viewing, thus we were referred to this site for advice.

This is the crux of the matter. If we keep the tv in the corner, at a comfortable seated "eye level", how do we get away from having to have a massive base unit, or if we move it to above the fireplace, will it invite trouble and just be too high?

Please be gentle - this is our first post.

Ps: What is 7.1, is it expensive, and where should additional cabling be positioned.

Welcome...and congratulations on your new purchase.

With regards to the tv above the fireplace...common sense will have to apply.
I came across the panasonic plasma tv FAQ giving advice about this. I suggest you look out for Sharp;s FAQ regarding this. As a rule i keep electronics away from heat sources.

You also dont want your tv too high where you're sitting...you eyes will be `fatigued' more quickly.

7.1 - 1 center front, 2 front ,2 side and 2 back speakers plus bass. before you consider putting some cash down, you have to consider what format is the material encoded in e.g. dolby digital plus, dts hd and what decoder you will need. This together with with HDTV is a BIG topic, so i suggest reading wikipedia for some more info. i doubt (correct me if im wrong) there is a lot of 7.1 material out there at the moment to justify the upgrade.
