moviemonster is go !

Hi There Steve here about to venture into my first attempt into a dedicated home cinema room .

I have frequented this excellent site for around 2 years now and have been astounded by the wonderful efforts by so many on here who have shown us what can be acheived with a little time money and vision .

Over the course of 18 months I have been planning to dedicate a spare room at home for my movie pastime . The room will be 12ft x 8ft which is not ideal but is sufficent. I have an epson tw10 projector which will be my main source for movies until I make the jump to a HI-Def projector in the future .
My screen is 8ft x 4ft and was made by me & my wife sue.

I have had the projector/screen now for over 2 years but Have not had full use from them due to lack of space where I have to set up the screen in the living room window on a temporary basis then is returned to storage behind the settee in the living room. A real eyesaw.

Prep work shall begin tomorrow where all walls will be bare and the room completely empty. I will then have to lift the floorboards in the upstairs bedroom / new cinema room cut a 5ft hole into the kitchen celing to allow me to get my 4ft wide screen upstairs along with all other wall materials plasterboard , kingspan etc. The kitchen celing has slight water damage from the bathroom upstairs so this repair work has been put on hold until I began my cinema room. All pictures to follow !

All building materials have been ordered today along with 2 leather recliner massage chairs and new carpet ordered to be fitted last when all is complete

I will post pictures as soon as I can and let everyone know of how things are developing . Thanks Steve

Re: moviemonster is go !

Here are some pictures to give some insight into the room I will be developing and also some of the work we have done so far .

This Cupboard in the corner of the room will become the new access to the room with the existing door blocked off . The main bedroom door will be closed permanently and the cupboard knocked through. The cupboard is back to back with another cupboard in our bedroom . These cupboards will now become the new walkthrough access .
The cupboard door in the cinema room will be removed and replaced with a thick black curtain on a rail .

[/IMG]

This was the cupboard before it was emptied today storing things I have collected over the last 18 months .

A Little Help !

The new walls to be built will be matt black and so will the celing with a red carpet on the floor . All 4 walls will have a new wall built in front of the existing wall a room within a room in you like and a new floor will also be laid on top of the existing floor to help with soundproofing .

The window you see in the picture below will have a blackout blind attached then a new wall will be erected in front of the window 2 inches away . An access panel will then be cut into the wall to allow access to the window for both safety and fresh air to get into the room. To cover the access panel on the wall I have a large poster sandwiched between 2 sheets of plastic glass 24x36 inches which Will be placed into a 3 inch x 1 inch picture box frame made from timber painted black and fitted with 2 sets ( top and bottom of poster box ) of 20w tube lights. Once the poster box is complete access will be made available to change the poster. The poster box will then be hanged onto the wall in front of the hatch which will be in front of the window on the new wall . The poster box will open from left to right and the the hatch behind will open right to left

This is where I have cut a 5ft hole into the floor to allow me to get my 8ft x 4ft screen upto the room and also plasterboard , kingspan etc which will be arriving soon. I have still to take out the piece of celing in the kitchen this will be done tomorrow.
It was not possible to carry the screen upstairs as there is no room at the top of the stairs to turn. The screen could not be cut in half for obvious reasons and also i didn't fancy the idea of a pull down material screen this size because they are quite expensive. So with as mentioned before the damage to the celing in the kitchen in general this was the route we have decided to take.

Here are my two electric massage recliner chairs picked up from focus DIY today . An absolute steal at £149.99 each down from £249.99 I am well made up with them.

[/IMG]

Not alot to do tomorrow cut the hole in the celing knock the wall through into the next cupboard and a bit of tiding . Monday I will build the poster light box .

Re: moviemonster is go !

Thanks for the interest being shown guy's. It looks like your questions have been answered Regarding the chairs. Done a few more bits today.

We have taken the wall down in between the cupboards to gain access to the room now . Feels very strange walking through there.

[/IMG]

[/IMG]

The door on the left can now be closed and the new wall built in front then the screen can be mounted on the new wall.

[/IMG]

The light switch you see here will be left there but the face plate will be exchanged for a remote control switch to allow me to turn the main light off and on. All sockets and switches will not be removed in the room as I did not want to call in an electrician to fit spot lights move sockets etc as this would increase my budget.

All lighting will be provided by 3 pin plug options and powered by extension leads from 2 sockets inside the room and from one socket in the next bedroom and a spare socket downstairs will be used so that everything is not being powered from two sockets in the cinema room The cables from the extension leads will be run behind the new walls . I don't know if it would make any difference powering everything from just 2 sockets but this seemed a little safer than total overload .

[/IMG]

A little bit down the road today tomorrow I will build the poster box light for the wall in front of the window and will do a bit of pottering. Can't do much more until B&Q Arrive with my wood an all on weds .

Re: moviemonster is go !

Looks like you've got your work cut out, smashing to see so many pictures, well done! Helps us all see the effort that you're putting in! Will certainly be watching the progress!

Can I ask why you lifted the floorboards all the way up up to the wall, the screen will be coming up between just 2 joists? Is it because your going to put some insulation in the floorspace?

I only ask because you've got to construct something now to carry the floor nearest the wall as the dividing wall is sitting on the joist.

Keep up the good work

Re: moviemonster is go !

The Area nearest the wall was the closest I could get to the damaged part of the celing that will be getting replaced . The Joist nearest the wall will have a large batten screwed to the side so that the floorboards will sit on top of the new batten.

Therefore I decided to not only cut out the only part of the floor I needed but also extend the cut across another joist so now when I return the boards They will be longer and also have 3 positions to which I can screw then down. I hope this makes sense to you. Check back at pictures for reference.

I have also ordered 10 packs of boards to be put down which will have a installation of kingspan underneath. This will in effect become my new floor and also provide a bit of extra soundproofing. The floor will rise approx 3/4 inches this will come above the door in the corner but as it is being blocked off it will not matter. Flooring will continue into the walkthrough .

The hole has now been cut in the ceiling and I will be putting up the screen later today . The plasterboard sheets etc which arrive tomorrow will be put up and work will then begin on relaying the floorboards and laying down the new floor.

Who do you think prevented the piece of plasterboard smashing on the kitchen floor. Maybe there is a reason why there are 2 chairs in my photo and not just one

Re: moviemonster is go !

The delivery today was a bit hit and miss !

Received Flooring boards and 56 lengths of batten instead of 50 but the kingspan on 3 sheets was slightly damaged on the edges. Plasterboards 20 sheets had to go back as half the length of them was rain damaged . Phoned up to let them know and had no problems will receive a new batch tomorrow and got £25 off the kingspan after explaining it can still be used so it would not have to be replaced.

Been out today picking up a few more bits. Got the dulux black matt paint for the ceiling and walls with B&Q's 25% off mixer paints deal at the moment plus another 20% off with my discount card. Also picked up the remote control lightswitch. Have not got around to doing the posterbox yet as I have decided to do a slight change to the design.

Re: moviemonster is go !

When I first decided to build the screen this was before I had ordered the projector. I too thought white would be the ideal colour but after a bit of research on these forums It became apparent that white produces more reflective light bounced back into the room . I came across a solution which seemed a far better professional approach whereby you aimed more at 2 colours mixed to become one.

These were from the dulux Ice-storm range where by you chose a dark grey and a light grey from the colour cards and mixed the 2 together therefore ending up with a grey which was neither too light or too dark. I went for Ice-storm 5 & 6 and thought the result worked out superbly in the end .

I will be watching sky in the room as well as dvd and will connect my xbox.

I will run a 10m scart lead from the sky+ box in the living room upstairs under the floorboards into the cinema room along with a 10m fibre optic lead to also run the same route. You may have noticed a couple of coax leads sticking out the floor in one of my pictures these were connected to the sky box to watch tv in the room before.

The scart lead will plug into the input on my dvd/hd recorder and then a second 10m scart cable will go from the output socket RGB pass thru enabled to my projector on the ceiling . This will give me both sky & dvd .

Wireless options have been tryed in this room before but with not great results which is why I have opted to go the wired route. As for the fibre optic link this will go into my amp to provide dolby digital in the room.

Will mainly be watching dvds - footy & giving the xbox a blast. I will make a jump into hd in the future but will not be replacing my dvd collection as there are far too many to replace maybe an upscaler will be best suited for me.

Re: moviemonster is go !

A few day's have passed and progress has been slow.
I have now wired the remote control switch for the main light And also wired the 10m scart lead and 10m Optical lead under the floorboards and down into the living room . Absolute horrible job but done now.

I've Started on the false walls but has been a really slow job due to everything needing to be perfect to fit the screen and floor between the two walls and also a horrendous lack of space to get anything done. There always seems to be something in the way that needs moving before I can start.

I am going to wire up the speakers and power leads behind the walls this week.
Then I will complete the framework already up fill in with kingspan and plasterboard the walls around about 3 quarters of the room. I will then lay the new floor so I can then move the materials what are left into the area that's complete. This will free up space for me to work on the other side of the room.

Giving away the battle plans on the wall here.

Scart & Optical from downstairs.

Remote Switch connected .

Need to finish the other side of the room so I can move all this plasterboard.

Re: moviemonster is go !

Only tried them in store. Not used the massage function yet as the chair on display was not plugged in but was not concerned because the massage feature is a bonus at this price. The Chair was very solid not the sink into effect you may get with other chairs. I would recommend you get this you will be hard pushed to get a chair of this quality for this price. The cheapest recliner in argos
is the same price but without the massager and was out of stock last time I checked.

Re: moviemonster is go !

Your studwork seems to need another upright in the corners to fix the plasterboard too. Thats a mini black and decker workmate thingy on your bench init? My dad had one of them - i inherited it. Keep the piccys coming - all looks like hard work but it'll surely be worth it in the end Can you still see the misses cook dinner in the kitchen through the ceiling hole, put a winch system in for getting your dinner upstairs

Re: moviemonster is go !

I've been quite happy with the epson and with only being able to use it occasionally the bulb has quite a full life still left in it . Providing there is no breakdown and the bulbs lasts I will be happy to use this for the next 12 months at least. The jump to HI-DEF should be cheaper by then for a replacement projector and dvd upscaler. Hopefully it will just involve a like for like swap on the ceiling with the projector.

Re: moviemonster is go !

Well Spotted mr gobby. Never done anything like this regarding building walls etc. So I am just trying to go with the flow hoping everything works out as I planned. Bit of a balls up here I can't pull back the wall on the left because of a small cut out in the frame that was needed so that the screen would fit so therefore I cannot attach the plasterboard in the corner. To resolve this I need to Complete both the left side and right side walls including insulation and plasterboard to the correct width to accommodate the screen. To do this I need to take out the front frame which is in 2 pieces and not attached put in plasterboard left and right then put back frames and screw to corners . The Kitchen hole has been filled in for now with the old piece cut out and the floorboards have been returned so the dinner with have to arrive the standard route THE STAIRS

Re: moviemonster is go !

MM, you could just insert another upright at the would be corner/return thats missing (if you see what i mean) and just board upto and onto that to form the corner, often onsite works would be done this way. Also if you haven't already, consider inserting some noggings between the uprights as this helps with strength and provides resistance to bowing and twisting of the studwork which may later pop the filled (or skimmed?) plasterboard screw heads

Re: moviemonster is go !

I will be inserting the noggings over the next few days. Have'nt much time as I work shifts and am on the late shift this week so only have a few hours in the morning to crack on. The corners are easy enough now as I have started to screw the walls into position on the floor & ceiling the tricky bit was making enough room between the walls for the screen & flooring to fit flush .
