My discrete install

Hi

Being the man of the house I had big plans for my home theatre using my beloved THX Mordaunt Short Speakers - BIG MISTAKE !

Then I was persuaded to buy a new 400 year old house and big speakers were banned by the missus! (who's got the trousers on now eh!?!)

The brief was "If you want a home Theatre it better be invisible" Not quite invisible but as discrete as my skills would allow!

The spare room is 4.5 m x 4.1m x 3 metres high, with tiled floors and 3 pairs of french door to the garden (with shutters to help keep out the light)

Firstly I selected the Bose Acoustimass 10 system in artic white for their big sound from small discrete boxes (not quite matching my now ebay sold THX Mordaunts but not bad!) All wires were fed into the roof space.

Then I had to choose a white projector to blend with the ceiling with the Optoma Themescene HD72i getting my vote.

The samsung HD850 dvd and xbox 360 are existing entertainment sources (although ive got my eye on a HD dvd) 5 metre run Monster 400 HDMI link source to projector with component for xbox 360 (chased into wall and now invisible)

I got a pioneer VSX1016 receiver for my birthday over chritmass matches thebose system pretty well

Next was the 90" widescreen Saphire electric screen (cheap and not quite upto the task)

I struggled for ages to get a shot that wasnt really blurred but here its is 'Ice age 2'

Overall im happy with the system but the screen badly lets it down and a decent screen will be my next purchase

Let me know what you guys think

Re: My discrete install

its very discreet if its installed in that first picture - can't see a thing (although perhaps some canny framing of the photo?)

Not tempted to put a pelmet around the screen or put it in the ceiling space?

What problems do you have with the screen? I'm looking at a cheap electric one to go in the ceiling space but don't want it to be a false economy.

You soundlike my missus

A pelmet is planned when im happy with the screen

The main problems im having is that it just wont go flat, it not noticed unless the camera spans across a scene in a film (then its like your on the high seas!) also occasionaly when you get a soild light colour in the middle of the screen you get a sparkle / halo / bright spot in the middle

screens are very difficult to audition I suppose and im not quite happy with mine - I suppose you get what you pay for!

Re: My discrete install

Where did u get your sapphire screen? They aren't normally "cheap".

I had a manual 2mtr screen which i parted with recently when i started my project.

my Sapphire was absolutely brilliant! Not a crease at all. In fact the material still smelt new 3 years in! The material was perfectly matte with no glossy spots at all. Never had a hotspot/sparklie in all that time!

Interested to know where u got yours. Heard a couple of complaints re the Sapphire but i'm sure for the few complaints there are probably a few hundred satisfied customers.

Re: My discrete install

Did you consider in ceiling speakers as a matter of interest?

Nice result all the same tho.
