Re: EVILDONKEY'S Home Cinema Progress Thread

If you are planing on having the sub inside the cabinet, i wouldn't if i were you. Subs usually need a lot of space to work properly and are very fussy about placement.

Are going to have all your kit in cabinets along the floor? If so should look good. Have you thought about getting a PJ also? A room that size is crying out for a 100" screen.

Keep up the good work and poste loads of pics.

Andy.

P.S. just had a look at your progress link. Whats with all the lights on the ceiling? Are they supposed to be in a pattern, because in the picture they look totaly random? Are you going to keep them like that?

Re: EVILDONKEY'S Home Cinema Progress Thread

Thanks for the advice about the sub. I was thinking of putting it under the shelf i'm building but i've been worried about the air flow around the unit. Great to have second opinion - i think i'll keep it external.

All kit is going in shelving unit which is recessed into the right hand side of the wall - the stud work across the width of the room will have a wood block shelf from left to right.

Lighting is in a circular pattern - the camera angle makes the pattern difficult to see in the photos but it looks really cool and obivous when you see it in person. It was difficult to install; making sure not to hit any joists!

Also, have made cable provisions (HD, Power, Trigger etc...) for installing a PJ and recessed screen - just can't afford to buy the kit yet!

I have a very good friend who supplies me the GU10 bulbs. There are 40 in the ceiling a total of 400w when on full. They look great when they're dimmed to movie viewing level. Can't have enough light IMHO.

I love the fire too, just the thing I aspire to. What did you build the firebox out of?

Re: EVILDONKEY'S Home Cinema Progress Thread

firebox is built out of 'fireboard' which is just like plaster board without the paper. it's now been skimmed with finish plaster so that i can paint all all of the area. The base itself has been covered in a natural dark stone mosiac tile.

This should be ready to paint over the weekend. i'll get new photos live ASAP

Plasterer's have been! finished the fireplace / tv surround. Picture attached. They've also today finished the recessed AV cabinet in wall and i've 'test' installed some of the ceiling speakers. They look great! I'll try to get some more pics up ASAP.

Re: EVILDONKEY'S Home Cinema Progress Thread

A few more picture of current progress.

I've also included a few shots of the multiroom audio system in the Kitchen. It's an Opus Octopus system - so they'll be a controll panel on the wall which is connected to the brain by Cat5. The actual control panel is the amp itself and sends the audio signal to the ceiling speakers. I have also connect to phonos and 1 x video for a small wall mounted LCD next to the panel which will also be controlled by opus.

I really enjoying this development and i'll be installing the large tv bracket this weekend and finally painting the lounge!

Re: EVILDONKEY'S Home Cinema Progress Thread

Hi all,

Have completede the following audio visual related tasks over the last few days...

1. BT Line has been connected and i've placed 1 x master and 2 x slave sockets in the cupboard behind the AV Alcove so that my Sky boxes, TiVO, Phone & ADSL can all connect there. (Put up a MDF board first so that i was able to screw sockets / routers etc easily and quickly)

2. TV installed and connected to Sky boxes ready for the Sky engineers visit next wednesday for installation of dish. I've run 4 Satellite Coaxs from the AV cupboard to the loft (all hidden nicely). The Opus Octupius system will allow me to keep all sky boxes in the AV Cupboard while being able to view / controll them in any room withan opus controll panel.

3. Second fix in Bedroom 1 - Opus controll panel has been connected to the 2x speaker cables, Cat 5 conrtol cable and the 2x phono cables (to tv) and fixed to wall.

4. Ceiling Speakers in Bedroom 1 have been connected and fixed to ceiling. They currently have paint/dust guards on and i'll put on the grills when carpet is down.

NB. Other rooms with opus are Kitchen, Dining Room & Bathroom. The lounge doesn't need to be an opus zone because it's where all the kit is located. Feel free to ask any multi-room audio or video questions; i've done tons of research on this subject!!

Re: EVILDONKEY'S Home Cinema Progress Thread

Hi all,

Can't Sleep! got too many 'house' projects running through my mind! So i thought i'd post the latest shots...

5.1 Ceiling Speakers have all now been installed. The centre and front right were quite difficult due to poor / old lathe and plaster ceiling and I had to customise the beackets / fisings supplied to get the speakers to install correctly.

Other rooms are coming along nicely and I should be able to show you Dining Room & Kitchen installs this week I hope

E.D.

A few of us know how that feels

The project is coming along well though, if you keep going the way you have so far they will all be done in no time at all

Re: EVILDONKEY'S Home Cinema Progress Thread

I must say how impressed with the Kef Ci3.20QT centre speaker i have installed. I finished wiring the switch today which allows you to raise and lower the speaker for use (I believe there's a remote kit available - haven't looked into that yet) anyway, the movement of the speaker from closed to open is remarkably quiet - very well engineered!! I can't wait to hear it in action.

Currently in dilema for Amp. do i go for Denon 3806 or Yam vx900? Any recommendations?

Sky Install tomorrow - Hope all goes to plan i've run 4 x co-ax from the AV cupbaord to the loft and then out of the soffit so all the Sky engineer has to do is hang the dish and connect cable to back of boxes and do the 'call back thing'

E.D.

Re: EVILDONKEY'S Home Cinema Progress Thread

I like all the speakers and plan to use the same kefs myself and was trying to work out which ones.

Looks like you have gone for 3 different models.
1 centre
2 square front left and right
2 round rear left and right

How much did you spend ?

Evil,

Looking good! Just 1 question:

When the plasterers came in, why on earth didn't you get them to skim the ceiling? That artex is hideous, and sooooo 1980's!!!

Re: EVILDONKEY'S Home Cinema Progress Thread

Ceiling's actually wallpaper! if we'd taken it off the ceiling would have needed re-boarding and skimming something the budget couldn't quite stretch to. Also in the flesh to texture is not as pronounced as it seems in the photos. You hardly notice it.
