Speaker cable polarity

I have just moved into a different house and the previuos owner has run speaker cable all around the house, and very kindly left the speaker switchbox in the living room for me. However, just glancing at the back of the switchbox, he doesn't seem to have used any pattern for which cable is + and which is -. I don't particularly want to start everything all over. Is there any way of checking the cable from the speaker end? I am thinking along the lines of playing some sound, and if a multimeter goes up, then red is connected to plus, if it goes down, red is connected to minus.

Thanks

Re: Speaker cable polarity

You can use a battery (example 9v PP3) to check out the +&- connections, just make sure you are not connected to the amplifier. Connect the + to what you think is the red connection and using your multimeter go to the other end of the cable to check the polarity.
