Soundproofing Question

Hi All

I all already have a room where we have our set up but are looking to kit it out a bit and get it to the next step. As This room is already built is there any way of soundproofing this room without ripping out the old plaster boards and fitting in new one's?

I Have heard of this new plaster that just goes over the old stuff and the will soundproof the room!

And what will be the best way to soundproof the ceiling/bedroom floor??

Re: Soundproofing Question

Hi Jay,

If you need to leave the walls and ceilings alone, and can only add, then you'll want to damp the surfaces and add mass. Please don't consider adding furring strips to the existing plasterboard. This will create a triple leaf and potentially cause additional problems.

Ted

Re: Soundproofing Question

Search the forum for green glue, this can be used to attach a second layer of plasterboard, the glue being the "damper" to give you better results than a second layer of board alone.

yes thats right, make sure you sell the edges and thats it, use the same board as you already have, which will be standard plasterboard i would think, screw the board in place as normal and then finish as desired

Will Acoustic Plasterboard be better of the job then standard plasterboard?

Yes, I then used plastertape on top of all the joints before they were skimmed

Re: Soundproofing Question

I used standard 12.5mm plasterboard. I understand the acoustic boards are slightly better but they are more expensive so it will depend on your budget.

However dont let this sound like normal plasterboard is somehow poor or less than satisfactory, it is a perfectly good product. From memory there are some tests on the Green Glue site which compare the normal stuff with the expensive boards and the differences are not huge

Re: Soundproofing Question

With respect to plasterboard, go with the mass. Whatever's heavier.
