I've recently "moved" into a newish house, and i've decided that while i've got 2 months left before i move out of the old place i'd do up the new one, im doing it this way as otherwise i'll move in and just not bother doing anything.
The Idea
1 - I want to connect my file server to my media center pc with cat 5 cable. The File Server is in my office that is directly above the lounge.
I plan to stream a lot of HD stuff and prefer wired networking.
The Plan
Both rooms are going to have new flooring, new paint and new skirting, so making a bit of a mess isnt a problem
1 - Create a 1m channel in the plasterboard for the lcd
2 - Create a 2.5m channel in the plasterboard from the floor to the ceiling for the Cat5e cable.
About a year ago i added some rear speakers to my lounge, i created a small channel about 10mm x 10mm using a stanley knife and a bolster to knock out the plaster then filled it in with some polycell instant plaster, painted over and it was unoticable that anything had been done

....
I now have to create 2 channels, 1m the other 2.5m, i realise that a chaser would be a good tool to use (not worried about dust as the whole room is getting changed) as using a bolster like before would take ages. Would i be able to fill in the channels using the polycell instant plaster, or do you think it would be better to get a plasterer round for a short while to sort it out.
Then the wood floor in the lounge will be fitted and some hollow type ( or routed, havent decided, ideas?) skirting be put on to hide the cat 5e cables that enter a 4 way RJ45 faceplate.
Job Done? thoughts.. concerns?
main concerns are what to do with regard to getting the wires between the floors, chasing a long channel, hiding wires in skirting and other things that i've probably forgotten being a diy noobie.
Hope the Pictures help:
