Guys, my plasmas due any day, but before it can go up, ive got to prepare the walls/cables and get replasterd.

Its going on the chimney brest, above the fire(hole in the wall one). Im just wondering what the best is that i can do. Im worried about chasing into the chimney breast as im totally new to this, and not sure how deep the brickwork is. Anyone know if there is anyway i can find out?

Also, another main worry i have is the cabling itself. Can i put power, component, hdmi, scart and speaker cables all into the wall?


Also, does anyone know where i can get a rough idea how far i can chase into a wall that is the main wall in between 2 semi detatched houses?

I may sound stupid , but im just a very worrying person, and im worrying about every single little piece of this, including the fact that if i have to replace cables ill have to replaster the walls !

Use some 20mm conduit or set in some trunking with a removable front to allow cables with moulded end plugs to be used(cables can be replaced without disturbing walls though end connections will have to be soldered) so you will not have to chase deeper than say 30mm-40mm
should be at least one course over flue.

so no problems there, the connecting wall should be at least 2 courses deep external cavity and partition walls may well be breeze block which is soft, though if you haven't tackled this sort of job before you could do a lot of damage,

I was over enthusiastic while removing tiles with a chisel attached to a SDS drill some years ago and loosened most of the bricks in a partition wall,

run mains cable separately from signal cable to avoid interference.

what method do you intend to use to chase the wall?

going to either rent a chaser, or buy one from aldi on sunday :D from the special buys.


So would i need to lay 2 seperate trunks 1 being for power?

Im just worried im going to go straight through to next doors house, as im hoping to channel it from the middle of the chimney breast, horozontaly across and round the breast into the main wall and then down. May actually be easier if i could come down the side wall of the chimney breast and out at the bottom, as my gear is going to be in that corner.

Or, i guess i could go horozontaly across to the edge of the flat breast wall, and then straight down , then i could use skirting board to do the rest?

a wall chaser is ideal,it makes masses of dust, so make sure you connect to a vacum "dont use a dyson it will ruin all the liftime filters" , check for other cables in the wall, yes keep power leads seperate if possibe, dont worry a party wall should be arround 240mm but not less than 100mm of course i dont know your individual case.

Plasma hasnt arrived yet, but my yamaha av59 pack arrived today. Going to pick up a wall chaser from aldi. Model looks ok, and it has laser line and a vacum connection.

Just want it all done now so that i can get on with having the walls skimmed, getting the flooring fitted and so on, as its a bloody mess at the moment with stripped walls, patches of plaster missing where ihave removed the dado rail , and concrete where the heart from the old fireplace was!.

Make sure you empyt the room of carpet and furniture first. Cover the floor with plastic sheeting.

Seal the door with tape (with you in it wearing a proper dust mask) and close the windows.

PS I'm curious as to what the laser line is for - it will be invisible in the dust.

Unless you've got a proper vacuum (ie one with a 4inch diameter hose) - yup the dust will be be very bad.

As an alternative, do you have any idea how tough and how thick your plaster is ?

It may be possible (it worked for me) to use a Hardpoint Floorboard Saw to cut either side through the plaster and then hand chisel out.

no idea how thick it is. Going to need to be going through brick aswell i think.

Done the rest of the channeling today, a ****ing nighmare, cant see for the dust now. Cant bloody breath either!

Hello All.

I just taken delivery of Mission M Cubes (7.1), Yamaha rx2600, HNS faceplates, a stack of banana plugs and a 100M spool of cable.
'ALL' I have to do now is route the cables within the walls.

Q) Any recommendations on 'chaser' models and accompanying vaccums?

q) Also one wall is horse hair lathe plaster, has any one tried inserting cabling into these?

Dont use a chaser. I purchased one and took it back, it was crap. Was just as easy and messy with a grinder and a chisel.
