Hi.
I have seen the advice regarding single layer stud walls etc...but I have a wall that would be ideal for my new plasma when I buy it, but is made of 3 sheets of plasterboard, stuck together.

What could I use to fix to this?

I have thought of just building a false wall in front of it...or just using a different wall, but this one would suit my current surround setup better.

Any suggestions?

Can you clarify that - are the sheets of platerboard attached to anything?

Hmmm...well...pretty sure they are atached to timber frame around the outside...wall also has a door frame in it and a rad on each side.

Its pretty sound, but...plasterboard construction...its not hollow, so teh expanding type fittings, would not work I fear.

If its got a doorway in it, how thick is this wall ?

I would say around 3 inches...

If there is a void behind the plasterboard, then use a toggle - on a longer bolt if necessary.

But an expansive type plug should grip well enough in 3 layers

In that case you definetly have some kind of studding.

To clarify your original post - when you say "three sheets of plaster board stuck together" - do you really mean three sheets of plaster board side by side?

If it is a stud wall, and as someone has previously stated at 3" width it probably is.

Get a piece of wood the same size as your bracket and cut out the same size of plasterboard.

fix wood to now exposed studs

fit bracket to wood

NO...I really, really mean 3 sheets of plaster board stuck together...I know this from when a) My kitchen was installed and b) when I moved a lights switch in said wall!!

So you've got three layers of plaster board and then what ??? Plasterboard is 1/2 inch thick - given your wall is 3" thick, there must be something else.

The plaster board in my house...is about 3/4 inch thick...its is on the dot and dab walls anyway.

I know what I am saying sounds weird...but..as far as I can tell...thats the way it is! LOL! I will have to lay my hands on a stud detector and see what I can find, if anything.

Thing is...if they are as I believe them to be...then do I have any options?
I had thought about bolting right through teh wall, with battons on either side...then placing a suitable picture or canvas or mirror on teh wall teh other side...

I suggest you measure the thickness of the wall exactly - the must (or should be) some kind of battening.

You say the plasterboard is thicker than 1/2 inch in other parts of your house - does it have attached insulation.

Presumably the radiators are attached to something ?

Failing all else - make a hole in it of sufficient size to have a look to see what (if anything) is inside.

Going to acquire a stud detector and have a search around...cheers for your patience though!

Sounds a bit like upstairs in our house which really confused me to start with. It is stud walls but in between the battening there is an extra layer of plasterboard don't know if it's for insulation/sound proofing. But when you drill through it feels as though your going straight through to the other side as there's no air gap. Hope that helps!!

In that case, assuming it fits in with your room (no fancy coving etc), I'd build a false wall and hang it off that (or in that).

Thsi was potentially teh plan...along with moving a lopsided radiator.
However..SWMBO...has pointed out, that considering we have only recently decorated said room and are looking to move...I am not allowed!
Looks like I am going to Ikea!
