My first real attempt at Home Cinema (BIG PICS, BIG PICS)

Hi guys, I have been hovering aroung the HT world for a few years now but having never had a chance to do it properly. For the last 3 years I have been bending the ear of the other half to allow me to convert the extension of our house into a HT. For the last few years I have aquired various bits of kit. I am now at the point where I can get going. I have some very firm ideas as to what i want but these have to be tempered somewhat by having to keep her in doors happy.
My room is 16ft x 11ft with a A frame roof. It has a large French windows into the garden, large glass entrace doors , two Velux roof lights and a side window. As you will see from the photos below light control is going to be a problem.

As you will also be able to see from these photos have already wired the room for the speakers and for a projector. I wanted as much of the wiring to be hidden as possible. I channelled the walls using an angle grinder which I inserted via a hole I cut in a plastic serving bowl. I then attached a hoover to the bowl via another hole. This allowed me cut into the wall and suck up the dust at the same time. I should have taken photos at the time as it would have explained things better but it did work well. Dust was kept to a minimum

My new Beamax screen arrived this week along with my New Infocus 7210 projector. The screen is 7.5ft wide, I was hoping to have a smaller screen but the projectors throw distance dictated this size. And boy is it big. the case is over 8ft wide. The idea is to hide it in a pelmit which I will build above the window and in frount of the curtains my other half will make. When its up it will be hidden. It will be operated via a 12v trigger from the projector.
Yesterday I mounted the screen and fired it up, damn its big.

I have already sorted out my DVD storage with these Ikea units.

They will have some kind of back lighting in the future.

These limited addition prints I have had for over ten years. They are very cool but will not be in the completed room as i intend to apply some accoustic treatment to the walls

Plans call for the installation of a 7.1 speaker system which will be KEF and Quad based. I have already aquired the speakers which are now in storage. The electronics are currently a combination of Denon and Nad Master Series, the plan is to have a complete Nad Master Series set up as and when I can afford it. All the lighting in the rome is going to be changed and will hopefully be LED based. I am also hoping to have a number of colour changing LEDS as well. Being as the room is built from block work and has a wooden floor the accoustics are very "Live" I will be looking to treat this in what I hope will be a good looking way, watch this space. The room will also be repainted in a darker colour, but not too dark according to the other half, with everything controlled by a Phillips Pronto.
I would welcome any suggestions or comments as this is the first time I have done this

Thats what i was hoping for. I still have a long way to go. Next up will be sorting out the wiring for the lights in the pelmit and the projector. I have a 12v trigger box so I just need to add a spur up to the screen. All the cables will be buried in the walls.
Anyone who has exp of controlling lights from the remote, I would welcome some advice on good but not too expensive remote switches

what are the dimensions please of the DVD shelving units, as its something I may look to incorporate in my HT room.

Do they easily fix to the wall, and are the mounting points rigid or adjustable?

thanks

Re: My first real attempt at Home Cinema

Ok things have been a little slow what with holidays and having to do the usual domestic stuff, but here is an update.
I have stated to build the pelmet and install the power for the electric screen and the lights. I am also puting in another electrical spur for a second screen, this is to keep the other half happy. The Projector has also been installed using a Vogel wall mount, but I dont like it as it is damn ugly, I may have to re-visit that one. I have also installed the 12v trigger for the screen which I got from Beamax, and I have to say for £90 the quality is a bit naff, they could have come up with a much better design, but at least it works.
I had to send back my first sceen because the motor was mounted wrongly in the case, this made it impossible to adjust the drop on the screen. I have added some pics below.

The start of the frame

[URL=

The screen requires two power sources, one for the motor and a 12v supply for the trigger box, so I have taken a spur of the mains and channeled the wall up to the screen

The 12v trigger box that I have mounted above the screen. When projector is switched on it sends a signal to this box to lower the screen

The screen mounted in the frame

I have now started to box the screen in

The light cannon is now mounted. I have made sure that I do not need to use any keystone correction. As you can see the mount is not a thing of beauty and I still have to tidy up the wireing

The 7210 in all its glory

A quick test fireing...... oooooohhhhhh......aaaaaahhhhhhh.....

And this new channel in the left hand wall(sorry i forgot to rotate it) will feed power and cables to this........

I got this for the other half as a birthday present, hopefully it bought me a few brownee points

So still a long way to go. Next up will be to finish the wireing and sort out the lights. I can then replaster and start the repaint.

Looking good Streetrod. I dont think that PJ mount looks too bad. I don't think you will find a wall mount that looks any better. Have you had any problems adjusting it so the image is centred on the screen? Mine was a complete pig!

Re: My first real attempt at Home Cinema

Hi, I spent a long time measuring so as to get it exact, that way I dont have to use any keystone correction. As for the mount it can be a bit arkward, its a matter of getting it tight enough so that it does not flap around and loose enough to adjust, its just try and error in the end.

I made a big mistake last night, whilst trying to tidy up the cables to the projector I managed to drill a hole into the cables to my back speakers, DOH!!!!!!, so after a lot of cursing I had to dig them out of the wall and replace them, all of this was at 1.00am this morning. I could not go to bed untill I had fixed them.
So beware a lapse of concentration can cause a lot of bother.

Bugger! I know exactly what you mean. I was up till 4am once while i was decorating my cinema room. I knew if i didn't finnish what i was doing i would just lie in bed all night thinking about it. Infuriating isn't it.

Andy.

Re: My first real attempt at Home Cinema

My LCD Mount arrived today from e-vision. Now I said that my projector mount was ugly, this thing is the complete opposite. Now it might sound a bit nerdy but I love a bit of good engineering, especially if it is made out of billet aluminium. It was not cheap but I think it will set off the Samsung LCD to a treat.

Great post Streetrod. Keep up this thread with your updates. Just about to start my long overdue HT project. Not sure where to start, but it's always good to see others work in progress and get good ideas such as those DVD cases from IKEA. Did not have any decent plans for storage before reading your thread. Good luck man

Re: My first real attempt at Home Cinema

A quick update, I have added back lighting to the DVD storage, which I think looks OK.

I have also cleaned up the cables for the projector and put in a dedicated power supply for it. The damage you see behind the cables is what happens when you manage to drill through your rear speaker cables in a moment of madness, ho hum. They were a real pain to replace as they are buried in the wall.

And hear is the LCD mounted on the side wall on its new mount. I am still wondering if I should backlight this at the moment, any comments welcomed

This week I will hopefully get the wireing finished I can then start to plaster over the mess I have made of the walls. Also SWMBO is getting impatiant and wants it finished. Onwards and upwards

Its that old favorite "Trettioen LEDs" from Ikea, simple and easy.
Inzaman can I ask where you got that Brown paint in your room? and does it come in other colours?

Hi Streatrod. That DVD cabinet looks brillient. I am thinking of doing something like that in my room now. I have the Trettions on the back of my front speakers which isn't really working. It just highlights the PJ cables coming down from the ceiling that i can't figure out how to hide yet

The paint is Dulux chockolate suade which i got from B&Q. I used it in my room after reading Inzaman's thread. Think it cost's £14.99 per 5ltr tub.

Good luck filling in all those holes, and be carefull when you are sanding as filler dust is a I didn't use a mask at first and could taste the dust in the back of my throat for a week!

Andy.
