Toby's little home cinema project

Here's my little home cinema project that I have undertaken recently after we moved house. Loved the house when we first found it, but I couldn't see an easy solution for where to mount my plasma and speakers.

This was how it all used to look in my old place...

And this was how the living room looked before we moved in...

After day one of the building work...

I got the builders to stick a 50mm bit of trunking in on the right hand side of the stud wall for all the cables. They also put me in some extra noggins where the left hand speaker needs to go.

After day two of the building work...

I got the builders to put the left hand speaker cable in for me, plus they drilled me a hole into the trunking for the centre speaker. That just left me the right hand speaker to do.

Getting everything measured up...

I just had to chase a short bit of wall for the right hand speaker and ran conduit through to the hall cupboard to join up with all the other cables coming along through the new skirting.

Just papered the wall, nearly ready for painting. The bit above the door won't dry though! Had to wait days for that.

And the finished product...

Thanks for the comments, folks. Much appreciated...

Sammy, the original set up was wall-mounted with 2 tubes used to hide the cables (couldn't be arsed to chase the wall as I knew we'd be moving within a year). The wooden thing at the bottom with all the AV kit in it is an Oppli bench from Ikea.

The cables from the plasma run down in the 50mm trunking built into the stud wall and then along in the skirting, through the bottom of the hall cupboard, and back into the living room in the alcove.

Singh, let me know if you manage to put your finger on it!

I think its just the angle of the shot, ufitsy, but now you've got me thinking and I will deffo be getting the measure tape out tonight when I get home! Fortunately the way the speaker attaches to the wll bracket is adjustable, so I can adjust it horizontally if I need to.

very neat job indeed i like the finished result.

i am getting something similar done ie moving the door 33" into the corner to make room for my 42" plasma, i hope it work out as neatly as yours but im a bit concerned i wont get all the cables hidden as well as you have. My walls are solid so a lot of mess to be made when the builders bring the stihl saw in to cut out the doorway.

have you left a space behind the skirting to run the cables by packing it out with a wooden strap? The trunking built into the wall did you use some kind of opening at the top for the cables to come thru?

i will need to look up more of these diy installs to find more info on what to do as the builders are coming soon

well done

Thanks, Bertie. To make space for the cables, I just got the builders to stick a 40mm square baton to the wall and stuck the skirting on to it. That leaves plenty of room for all the cables. I just need to tidy up around the edges with some filler once I have finalised the cables.

As for the trunking in the wall, its just a length of 50mm plastic conduit which we left holes in the top and bottom of to allow the wires in and out. There's nothing clever about it to be honest - the builders put plasterboard over the whole stud and I just punched through where I knew the right place was. I tidied it up a bit and rounded off edges to prevent any problems withe cables, but its all behind the plasma wall mount, so it won't ever be seen.

Cheers!
