New DIY Screen Finished .

Hi Guys

Well after reading some of the below threads today in work, i shot off an hour early and bought a new saw, some wood and black out blind material.

http://members.shaw.ca/danhanson/The...eenproject.htm
cheers to Dan Hanson for this guide

4 Hours later... Ive got a new massive screen its about 98" . 220cm wide.

Id advise anyone to do this who is contemplating a home made job. It was so cheap, and at the moment its sat on my window sil held up with bluetac, its that light.

Also its got more of a mat effect so non of the hot spot issues like foamex (Please correct me if im wrong)

Well cheers for your inspiration everyone. Just need my own house now so i can really go for it

Wood + Glue = £12 (4 x 22cm x 2.2cm x 240m Pine)
Saw = £10
Velvet and Blackout = £13 (2.5 meters or each)
Staple Gun from Work
Miter off dad

so £35 all in all aint bad for a screen this size, that looks this good.

Comments welcome

That does look great - I've just about finished the work on my cellar conversion and was going to make a diy screen, so this is well timed!

Where did you get the materials from? I'm tempted to build a screen at the weekend if it's that straight-forward. Looks like even I could do it!

Cheers,
Rich.

Hi Rich

I got the Blackout Material from The Fabric Warehouse, southport, but id presume any curtain maker would have it in stock. Also make sure your keep it on the roll to avoid creasing.

I needed mine to be portable hence why i used blackout material. If you are going for a permanent screen ive herd a mdf board and projector screen paint is the best way of going.

Good luck with your build, really is a doddle, even for novices just like me . . lol

Even cheaper screen!

Just bought an ikea roller blind TUPPLUR 195cm x 200cm wiith a blackout backing - only £19.99!
Hung it from the roof and it's fantastic - especially if you aren't too good with hammer and nails.

i have one of these and im happy with it for now, i was thinking of adding this ,what do you think would it work? Self Adhesive Black Flok Tape at http://www.goosystems.co.uk/products.htm
depending on how thick it is weather or not it would roll smoothly .

Hi Guys

Id had a Rollerblind myself for a while, but the ripples started to annoy me eventually. With the homemade screen like the one above, its almost like a tensioned screen because you have stretched the material over the back of the frame.

I had more difficulty getting the Blind to stay in my plasterboard roof than making the Fixed screen, and i really am crap at diy

i used chunky twist screws which grip into the plasterboard works well.

There is no going back though once you have experienced the big screen in your home.

That's 40sqr feet roughly. What pj will you be using EDT? If you reduce the lumens by 30% that's about what you will have in reality, then divide 40 into the real lumens and hope that you have above 9. That number will reduce further over time as the lamp ages and dims.

It's border free (as its a blind in essence) so I can use as much/as little as I want (though probably as much knowing me). I'll try & stick a picture up if I can see how.

Projector.. recently treated myself to a Panansonic AE900 is nice n bright ! Has more oomph than my Sanyo Z1 which would struggle at this size plus the dots would be obvious too at this size.

I'm going to leave it down all night as

1. it has a few creases
2. pongs bit plasticy !

It virtually fills the width of the dining room (thats what the missus calls the room anyhow.. I use a different name) in our Victorian style house (ie quite long & narrow downstairs). Ideally would be able to sit bit further away but limited to about 15 feet so it may be a bit like sitting in the front row of the Odeon.
Next job to wall mount the front L/R speakers just got back from shop with the wall mounts. Done the rears last week.

the creases pretty much sorted now.. wish the plastic 'new thing' smell was!! Hopefully not to long.. would have opened the windows bit earlier but pee'ing down today.

Really pleased with it for the loot. The whole reason, apart from obviously always wanting more more MORE, was that with my old 1.8m (think it is) screen 2.35:1 releases werent showing that tall. Obviously got to be a bit careful as it's still standard def video & too big will look ghastlyl of course PS3 not a million miles away...

Ed

edited to say... these are at full 2.6m across! Oh yeah baby

Inspired by this thread, I went to B&Q to get the parts for the frame, and found some ideal materials. They sell 4 peices of skirting board, curved on one edge, 2.1m long x 7cm x 1cm for less than £9. I just mitered these then fixed them with the metal brackets, a bit of sanding (and a bit of filling as the wood had a few knots that were not flush with the surface). I then gave the frame a few coats of matt black paint and the results are great. I'm not sure whether to get a piece of MDF or the blackout material (I'd prefer the material but haven't found anywhere local yet).

Now, the money I've saved can be spent on more goodies for the cinema :-)

Well done mate. Got any pics.

Im really happy with the blackout material, but if the screen was perminant i would of used an mdf board and some decent screen paint. Just to get those perfect blacks

Here're a couple of pics. Note that it's propped up on two stools at the moment - not the final mounting method!

Inner size is 76"x43" - frame is ~3" wide. I think I'll take your advice and go for the mdf and try a paint mix.

Cheers,
Rich.

Thumbs up Re: New DIY Screen Finished .

[FONT="Verdana"]Greetings everyone, hope your all having a good Christmas with this lovely weather...
In fact that is the next stage for myself, 'try a paint mix' that is, just finished my screen today, assembling that is, it's not been painted or covered as yet (see attachment)! Because it's in the loft it's like a Batcave up their, anyhow a number of members have said about Black Velvet and after a quick search of eBay I’ve found two ('Hades Black Velvet' and 'Sorcerer Black Velvet'), one is slightly more expensive than the other, I'm just wondering which would be the best material for a Batcave (loft) home Cinema.

oh and the screen is 98" MDF sheet at 12mm thick with Redwoodn 50mm by 50mm framing.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a particular paint mix? In addition, I've not purchased the projector as yet, I'm currently opting for the 'Pearl' however, with the imminent arrival of the new 'HD1' only time will tell which one I decide to go for..

Comments and suggestions are all welcome, thanks in advance.
Andy
