Talking Finally finished - V40 Wall

Hi guys,

I was inspired by a number of people on this forum to change my living room around after purchasing a new TV. It's taken me a while to get things together and I was aiming to put photos up as I went along. However I didn't get much time to do that during the process - the mrs was setting the deadlines!

..anyway, I did manage to take a few photos along the way so thought other members maybe interested in them? There are a plenty on my website http://www.stephenmountford.com (under 'album') but I've added a few here incase you're like me (ie lazy).

Hope you like them - I'm well chuffed! Thanks again to everyone on the forum for help and ideas!

Looks good, but thats not your center speaker away above the top of the tv is it. Just that i have been reading some advice that says always put your center speaker under the tv.

Thanks, the lights are from Ikea - I originally wanted the white ones but couldn't source them - I think the blue look pretty good though.

Yeah, it is pretty high. The problem was that we wanted the shelf at the bottom and didn't want the TV too high so it was the only option. It doesn't actually seem to make that much difference - to my ears anyway - ideally it would be placed lower though.

Yep, myself and and father-in-law. We even did the plastering - which I've never done before - and, although it took longer than a professional is pretty darn good even if I say so myself So dead pleased.

It's a philips photo frame. The wife was moaning about the lack of pictures on display around the house so I bought her one of these. It rotates through the pictures (about 300) all day - now she's a happy bunny!
http://www.engadget.com/2005/09/20/p...isplay-review/

The cost, I think was roughly as below;
TV £2200
Cables £350
Building Materials £150
Sockets £50
Carpet £200

It took a lot longer than I expected and I really under-estimated how difficult it was going to be to do all the wiring. Incidentally I ran cables through the side wall (left) and into the kitchen to feed a wallmounted philips. Meaning I can watch SKY in the kitchen. I made sure I ran DVI to the kitchen to keep it future proof (roll-on SKY HD!)

Excellent. Probably one of the best i've seen, it makes me want to build a false wall for my bedroom with the TV in the middle, but i think it would make my bedroom look far too small ... Anyway, great peice of work

Also, would you be able to take a completed shot of the TV from the angle that the second last picture was taken at? Because i think that would concentrate more on the TV, for all of us to see

Thats a real smart job you've done there mate, really impressed.

I've just one question if you don't mind.

I'm doing somthing similar in my bedroom, all be it that I'm using an existing stuc wall to mount mine to.

How have you powered your screen? Is there a hidden socket behind the screen or have you run the power cable with the other cables, then plugged it into a socket by your equipment?

This is the one delemna I have at the moment, and don't know is the best thing to do.

Any advice?

Hi StevieB,

The power is run from the mains circuit via a fused spur which is, in turn, connected to the usual IEC mains plug for the TV. The fused spur is a nic e brushed steel affair with a switch so that I can power it down if I like.

Hope this helps?

Looks superb... feeling slightly inspired...

I assume the unit is anchored to the back wall - in which case, how have you gone about ensuring a tidy fit at top and bottom i.e. unit-floor and unit-ceiling joins?

TIA.

Thanks for the compliment.

The wooden frame was screwed to the chimney wall with some hefty screws and plasterboard was placed over the top of it. I made sure the boarding cam very close to the ceiling and then just plastered in the hole. At the bottom there is a small gap which is now covered by the skirting board (and carpet)

cables

Just how many cables and what are they, are used, they looks a lot !!!

I was just going to run componant, dvi and hdmi to mine, which the start of the project can be seen here - Plasma install - False chimney breast

also, my false wall, i was planning the depth to be minimum, maybe just an inch more than the depth of the screen.....

will this be ok ??

dont want any light leakage....

I can't remember all the cables off the top my head but basically, if there is a socket on the back of the TV there is a cable (with the exception of a few). 3xRGB Scart, Component, HDMI, audio, Aerial etc.. Also, I ran svideo, HDMI and audio out into the kitchen so I can have HD in there too!

With regard to the wall depth. Mine is a frame mounted onto breeze-block. The depth is around 2cm (I'm sure someone will confirm the exact amount), which was basically what all the other existing walls are. You need to make sure you have enough channelled depth to get your cables in and remember that if you take them around a corner that you will not want to over flex them.
