What sysytem do i buy

Help……..

I am not really in to all the AV lingo and techno detail and I am therefore totally lost. :-(

I have come down to a choice between four TV's and I cannot choose between them.

Could you point me in the right direction…I'll give you a little more detail

I do not subscribe to Sky…I have a Humax Freeview box which delivers a reasonable digital picture 68% signal strength so the box says.
The room this system is going into is 18 ft long by 12' wide and we would be sitting 8 -10 feet away.

DVD recorder Sony RDR-HXD910 with either (Still not sure on LCD or Plasma …)

Pioneer PDP436XDE or
Toshiba 42WLT58 or
FUJITSU P42HTS40GS or a ( this model has dropped in price recently and seems a lot cheaper than you have suggested reviews, seems a good buy) or
Sony KDLV40A12U 40" LCD TV

These are all priced around £2000 tag

Which set up would you go for and why please?

….and can you recommend a sound system to compliment max £600

Many thanks for your anticipated comments

Regards

Vince

Vince, you are probably better off asking about the choice of displays
in the Plasma, or LCD forums.
For your sound system you have a few choices, AV amplifiers/receivers,
or an all in one system. There are forums for those too. Have a good look
around the forums, you will get all the advice you need, it is a great place.
Welcome to the forums mate.

I'd spend less on the display, and more on the sound system.

A good sound system will last you for ages - some of my kit is 10 to 20 years old. Makes sense to buy something decent, rather than scrimping now, and upgrading in a year or two.

The way TV technology is changing, the display you buy now will be superceded in six months. The price will also have halved in a year. My Samsung has dropped by 25% since Christmas.

Audio equipment hasn't really changed in years, especially amps and speakers. Most "improvements" are just pointless bells & whistles. There have only been two real advances in 20 years - NICAM stereo/Prologic for broadcast TV, and digital/5.1 for CD/DVD.

With your total budget, I'd look at buying a mid-range TV, or last year's hi-end. For audio, get a 2 year-old AV amp and speakers, secondhand. You'll end up with a very good sound system, and a decent TV that'll do you until the "next big thing" comes along.
