Offering my services!

As my home cinema hobby has grown over the last ten years so has my knowledge of how to put together a system and intergrate it in to various situations.
I love this hobby and i enjoy helping anyone who has a simelar feeling.
My knowledge of DIY is only reasonable but my experience of moving/shifting/fitting/sorting and installing home cinema kit is pretty good now.
I am aiming this thread mainly at people first starting out in the Yorkshire area.
If you would like any help starting out or even just a help lifting stuff give me a call the way i see it is that if all local folk help each other ie 2 people in north London or 2 people in Leeds then we could all save a load of work. A problem shared etc.

Before anyone says oh yeah how much? My services are free as long as you are prepared to pick me up and drop me back at home and as long as you would be prepared to return the favour at sometinme in the future.

Is this a good idea? Mods if you think this is a daft idea then please feel free to close.
Regards,
John.

Great idea. I can see it now, the wife goes away for the weekend, and two dozen forum members convert the living room into a dedicated cinema room before she gets back.

I'm hopefully building my own house this year - if the planning appeal goes through - any brickies offering their services free?

I too think this is a great idea. It would also increase our knowledge base (mine at least as I know very little). I guess we just keep an eye on the DIY section and see who needs help installing what in our respective areas. For guys like us who enjoy it as a hobby it is an excellent way of working together for overall benefit.

My poxy work laptop has page forward and back buttons above the left and right cursors (on either side of the up cursor) and I've hit 'back' twice having just written a quick reply!!!!!!!!!!!!

So here we go, third time lucky....

I think this is a really good idea. I'd be happy to lend a hand (I'm in the Tunbridge Wells/Kent area). I've had quite a bit of DIY experience (re-furbed 2 flats, building a house), and I'm just generally interested in the whole thing.

Given that Britain is slowly becoming a land of law suits, it maybe worth the mods setting up an area for this and covering it with a 'good samaritan' clause, so that if someone offers their time F.O.C to help wall mount a plasma, and the plasma falls down 2 weeks later, then it's just bad luck and the helper can't be taken to court etc...

Ps. When I say 'building a house' we're having a house built, and we're doing some of the work ourselves (wiring the multi-room A/V etc...).

This is a great thread and long overdue I feel.

I am just about to move into a house that I have rented out for 2 years and now it needs gutting.

I am going to try and incorporate as much AV theme into the house as possible as all the walls need replastering and all the floor boards are exposed. I am going to try and do most of the work myself and I don't have much experience in DIY any help would be appreciated

Maybe there could be a section within the forums to search for all members that live local to you.

What an excellent origonal idea!
I too live in Yorkshire but have just bought a new build in Bolton, Lancashire. This will not be ready to move in to until May, can't wait by the way
I will be converting the garage into a dedicated theatre room once i move in on weekends over time. I'm pretty good on the diy bit but would love some help in the future
This deffinately deserves it's own section on the forum and i think it will snowball as one good turn deserves another as they say.
P.S.
My missus can't cook but she buys enough biscuits to feed an army

I think its a good idea but what id like to add is...

The people up for it from diefferent areas can say what theyre good at or what they know about. For example , ive offered a lot of advice via pm and a it seems a lot of people are into I.t and have said if ever i need computer advice just ask! Which is great as i know f-all about computers!

I say this because it seems (and i dont mean this offensively) that not that many people on here know a great deal about d.i.y and you'd probably find the same group of members doing all the work!

If everyone states what they can do then it can develop into a great idea! e.g someone might know about plumbing , someone else about car mechanics , another person about financial advice! All done in good will of course , a favour for a favour , everyones happy!

Just my 2 penines worth anyway

Jon

i'd like to second Jon's comments... it would certainly help in being able to solve issues if (when) they crop up.

so - whats the next step from here? how do we proceed?

although it raises a question of, how does one rate there skill level?

my good might not be the idea of good (although i've never had a problem yet!)

if that makes sense?

Jonathan

Unless someone has already mentioned it, I think we should reply to members offer of help through a PM so as not to clog up the thread. Just a thought

Appears there is quite a Northern bias with regard to member location... Must be the cost of living down here, nobody can affored any AV equipment!!!

Anyone here from the Southeast / London area?
