Hi All

I have finally started my garage conversion. I have had some of my equipment sitting idle for almost a year now. New baby and a house to finish has delayed things.

Anyway, I thought I'd post now as it's always good to get advice as you're going along. It's not going to steam ahead but will hopefully be completed by June.

The garage is currently 20ft long by 10ft wide before work. The first job was to remove the leaking roof which I have just completed. I will hopefully start building the stud work and bricking up behind the door in the next couple of weeks.

Pictures below show the old roof, removed, old window taken out, new roof and new window.

Looking good.

One thing though, the roof looks a little bit "simple", so to speak, is it well sealed so that rain will not leak in etc? Just a thought! .

Had a good soak test. The old roof was just corrugated asbestos sheeting. The new roof has had additional joists added to support a bitumenised OSB board roof (gaps sealed with sealant) which then has bitumenised corrugated roofing sheets on top.

I will be adding insulation above the new plasterboard ceiling once the inside gets under way.

Just one thing - why didn't you take the opportunity to do away with the window completely? The last thing you want in a HC is one of those bloody things! Or is there to be other rooms in there aside from the cinema?

Mr Bump. I totally agree with you and it was my intension to just brick it up. My wife however wanted to keep it so that the room could 'double up' as a chill out area in the summer for get togethers. The room will be decorated to HC standards (dark non reflective surfaces etc) so the only compromise was the window. As she funded the projector it was a small price to pay A blackout blind and heavy curtain will have to suffice.

Blimey - that's what I call a project! When I saw the first few photos it reminded me of the abandoned cowsheds you see in the Dales

But the new roof looks good so I'm sure it'll turn out just dandy! Make sure it's snug and dry and the dpc is in tact. Don't want all that expensive gear rusting from the inside out do we ?

Looking forward to seeing the progress on this, i was a bit dubious about the roof at first but it sounds like you have sealed it well. The dimensions of the garage are really generous as well so gives you good room for a cinema and soundproofing etc.

Just added another picture for those sceptics showing how the roof is made up of corrugated sheeting on board

I decided to keep the sheeting style and not felt it to keep in with my other garage on the other side of the property.

That is exactly what I am going to do but I am having to take down my next door neighbors concrete sectional garage and rebuild it on the existing garage base in my back garden and also remove the asbestos roofing, Thats a good point, where did you get rid of the asbestos roofing.
I will be watching this thread with great interest keep posting and with loads of pictures and good luck.

The asbestos sheets were removed intact. They are propped up against my house for now. Surrey Heath Borough Council have an appointed site that will take the sheets free of charge (up to six at a time).

I need to arrange to get them there. It would be worth checking with your local council to see if they have free disposal procedures in place.

Regarding the extra joist, what size did you use

I used 7x2 joists as that was what was already there. I figure it will give me 4 inches of insulation and an air gap of three inches once the plaster board has been fitted. Had to go to a timber yard though as B&Q only stocked 8x2.

For info - last time I was up the tip - (Portsmouth) they were taking asbestos as long as it was wrapped (they provided the wrap) and placed in the seperate container....

Time for an update.
I had some time last weekend to start putting up the internal stud work.
My builder friend is very busy at the moment so I decided to have a go at building the wall myself, it's getting there....slowly. Never going to win points for neatness, just as well it will all be covered up with plasterboard

Oh, the drainpipe you can see sticking out of the wall will be for the cabling run up to the ceiling mounted projector.

Pic 1 shows the insulation slabs between the stud work
Pic 2 shows the new consumer unit for the room
Pic 3 shows the first plasterboard fix and floor down.
Pic 4 shows the screen being fixed.

The walls will have a second skin of plasterboard. The consumer unit may look overkill but is was cheaper to buy a fully loaded split unit. I have taken the oppurtunity to feed the AV rack, alarm, PJ, lights, outside socket from seperate circuits.

Long time no posting !

I have gone back to studying so am away for most of the week. I have cracked on when I can at weekends and can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I only have to give the paint a second coat (inzaman should recognise the paint ), get the carpets laid and then start wiring everything up.

Hopefully will be watching the first movie in a couple of weeks, just need to decide on what to watch first

I have finally finished the conversion. It has taken six months to complete at odd weekends when I have been able to get the time to do it. The following photos were taken today.

It's been a great help following other people's progress and getting ideas from the forum.

Now to pour a beer, sit back and enjoy !
