i'm a total rookie in home cinema systems and i got a lot of questions.. but one to which i haven't found the answer yet is whether are there any home cinema system capable of playing cds in divx format?

if not, can something be done in order to make a "non-playble divx" home cinema system play a divx format cd?

as far as i know there are dvd players capable of playing divx, only make that i know is yamada.
try looking in the dvd players section

jamo dvr50 plus a305pdd is a great home cinema system that can play xvid and divx (and looks pretty cool too!)

How about a modded XBox. £99 for the XBox - approx £40 - 80 for a mod chip depending on if you do it yourself or send it away. And then you just need XBMC (Xbox Mulltimedia Centre). It will play anything streamed from your PC or on a Disk and is always being updated to newer versions.

That way you can always play everything, whatever new formats are emerging eg HiDef stuff, MP3 librarys, DivX, etc

cant recommend a modded xbox enough. It can do absolutely everything (stream pictures/mp3s/radio/divx/xvid/dvds off your computer/internet/dvd) emulate old consoles if you are into that type of thing. Whats more it gives a really impressive picture quality. I have an AMD XP3200 with 512mb ram and a 9800Pro graphics card and the xbox picture I think is much much better!!!!! I dont know if anybody concurs here but ive met many others who agree. Plus it gets updated every week and is open source so you know it will never stop being updated.
If you chip it yourself you can do it for £99 + 35 for a no solder chip.
Whats more you get a top rate console aswell

I've got a Pioneer DV-470 which is capable of playing DIVx (although I've not tested it yet). Was only £107 from hifibitz.

Many claim Divx playback but not many do it very well imo! i have the Pioneer 575 wich plays Divx but say you have ahigh bit rate divx file to play, say spread across 2 cd's then its useless as it cant cope with it and plays it at a very low frame rate!! My modded xbox and PC's play them flawelessly though

I have a Philips DVP 630 which plays DivX movies very well. Only problems are if you put more than one on a single disc - so far I have only managed to do this once without everything other than the first file being corrupted. Given that blank CD-Rs and DVD-Rs are so cheap this isn't a major problem. Also you will need to download the firmware update to enable subtitles - other than that it's great with DivX, I haven't had any problems with anything I've fed it.

Best part - £45 from Sainsburys (that was on special offer though, don't know if they're still that price) and it even does Prog Scan via component outs - for the money it's a great machine.
