Toyed with the idea of using 450mm PVC drainage pipe - couldn't locate a short piece though, not that I looked very far... a sonotube design wouldn't fit in my movie room too well, but the idea of making one (or two !) appeals from the diy'er inside me.

Essex tubes want £35+vat for one column forming tube (delivered), although I'm unsure as to what length that is at present. Depending on the length needed and the chance to cut this up and share it, this maybe a cheaper option! However that is not the source I'm following at present. However what I need to do now is learn how to calculate the volume needed for the sonotube based on the "Rock" sub and tuning to about 20hz (I'd like anyway). I will probably mount the amp internally as well, aka (insert witty lost webpage here!) and hopefully end up with something like http://www.quux.net/roo/diy/sonosub/photos/P0001174.jpg I think I've already got an idea for the sock http://www.tinklersmotorcycles.co.uk.../stockings.jpg but again that's just an idea. I built one about a year ago, the thread seems to have been archived I can repost pics if you want.

Volume's easy simply I think it's pi X diameter X length, I did the tuning using winisd and then adjusted it for my room.

I got the tube from Essex, but if you find a cheap supplier I may be interested in building another one.

Thanks for that. I'm more likely to go for carpet or sock finish (in black). Just need to find some nice wood for the caps (mdf for internal bits).

Well believe it or not, I found what I needed on E-Bay! The seller says they have more http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...e=STRK:MEWA:IT and I've already been talking to them about the p&p which we are trying to sort out.

I was also thinking about using slices of treetrunks for the end carp finishers, but I don't know if it ould look correct or not. Beach would be nicer.

Also I don't have a sub/panel yet... maywell borrow the relax-12 stuff. Only thing is I can't decide on external, or internal mounting of the amp.

That looks like a bargain, that's going to be one huge sub though !

I went for external amp since it was easy to make a box to house the amp rather than cutting a hole in the tube and putting batons in the sub, and much easier to change/upgrade the amp at a later stage. If you go external all you need to seal is a couple of small drill holes for the speaker terminals.

Be interesting to see how you mount it though if you for internal

Well I wanted the sub and port in the bottom, so I needed the wider tube. It maybe cut down a bit depending on how bg it looks when it gets here (and what swmbo says) but that's roughly a 300l pipe at the moment.

Well I didn't think it would cost so much, but he reckons the tube ways 20kg and he sent it via TNT today so I should get it on monday at a cost of £20.... Oh well I guess it's still cheaper than Essex tubes! Better buy some mdf now and I think the internal mount amp is nice!

Holy ****e that IS a big tube! SHMBO said too big, so it will probably be cut in half (150ltr I think that will make it). Going to have to recalculate port lengths etc.

That tube is HUGE, i can now see why the SVS subs look so big.

Well I'm still waiting to find out if the 15" shark is dual 4ohm or dual 2ohm... Having the 100amp 8ohm panel kind of limits me, I wish it was a switchable panel (4/8ohm).

Been one of those days, got a huge sheet of mdf (2440x1220x18mm) cut into 4 unequal sections (to fit in the car) and started to make my first cut.

How do you cut circles with the router ?? Do you have a jig or a home made device ??

I know it better to make several passes when cutting through mdf, i did 3-4 passes with my 1050w router, when i did cut out the back panel.

The circle jigs are pretty good, but are expensive.

Updated pics, done a fiar bit of routing still lots to do to finish off. Also toying with ideas for finishing the sub tops/bottom and main part. Seen some sticky back carpet on ebay, but I'm worried that will make it look a bit carish. Also seen some of the stone effect plasti-kote, that could be cool... or just the standard black paint and a sock!

How do you get away with using a router in the kitchen and no mess ??

When i did the back panel in my sub, i was cleaning up MDF dust for days in the garage !!

I think black paint and a sock would be best, not sure about the carpet.....i suppose it depends on it's surroundings and how it's gonna blend in.

LOL - I did the routing in the garage, but with a hover attachment. It works pretty well with this new router (Bit of a bargain from argos!) until I made the final deep cut and it was blowing down a lot. So my kit car is covered in crap as well, but no point in cleaning that till I'm done.

Seen some Pine effect(?) spray as well! black/sock is very traditional though.

Done a lot more work, all the major routing (except speaker size) is not done. Biggest problem is that the tube was not round, it's been squashed somewhere along the line, and it's REAL hard to get the end stops in. Need to get the 4" tubing for the port still, and some leg stands and other bits...
