Working on a follow up to the XXX, since it has now been sold. I always work on the basis of build the best you can then next time go one better so here I am

This one is sort of a big brother if you like.

I'm still working through design details and then modelling them but I can tell you that it will be 4m long transmission line design featuring a 15" Volt Radial driver.

Rough dimensions at the moment are 100 H x 43 W x 50 D (cm). So its far from small and roughly 2x as large as the original XXX.

I know I'm not going to be able to go much deeper, if at all, than the XXX since its in room frequency response was +/-3dB 10hz - 80hz. But the quality of the bass wasn't the best, musically it just wasn't quite right and that was even after EQ.

So this time around I want extension but great musicality. Volt is probably one the most respected manufacturers of hi-end studio grade bass units. So it was an easy choice when deciding to use their 15" Radial driver over the typical and impressive brute force subs such as the Tumult etc.

Hopefully I can get building the box next week sometime.

Okay more details here:

• Driver: 15" Volt 'Radial' R3853 - £380 from here

• Amp: BK BSBP500 500w subpanel - £220 from here

• Cabinet: 3 x 25mm MDF 8ftx4ft Sheet - £45

Total Cost is around £650 for an unfinished bare MDF enclosure. Finishing could then cost as little as £20 for fablon, £30-50 for spray finish or around £100 for real wood veneering.

Personally I plan to cover the sides, top and bottom in hard wearing black/grey fablon and then spray the front and rear black. This of course could change but its how I see it at the moment.

Ordered the Volt driver already but have been told there is a 2-3 week wait whilst Volt build some more I guess. Its on order anyway. MDF is also sat up in the shed ready for some cutting

PS. Anyone interested in a BSBP100 sub amp, £80inc?

The BSB500 is great for AV, however, I found there were better alternatives if musicality was high on the list of requirements.

Always open to opinions and other options. Luckily I haven't ordered the amp yet so the door is still open for change.

Musicality is high on my list so the Hypex is definitely on my mind. Is there any other UK distributors other than design3dw?

Gary do you have any experience with the DT300?

Good price at £155 and it looks like its more highly rated than the BK for SQ.

The Radial is an 8ohm nominal load and it looks like the output of the DT300 is around 200w at this level. Would like a little more power on tap and the next step up would be the Hypex HS500 which is way over budget nearly £500.

Sorry, no I haven't. It's been a few years since I posted those comments and I've moved on from plate amps.

If you want something to do for the next 3 weeks while you wait for delivery of the Volt driver I've got a Hypex HS200, an Adire Shiva and a 3ft tube that you can play with, I've also got a spare Tumult knocking about as well. You'd have to come and fetch them though.

I believe Quested use these drivers in their reference 5.1 monitoring installations.
If it is indeed the same driver, I've mixed on a system using 3 of them many a time and the LF response is staggering (totally dedicated studio of course but the extension is seismic when needed)

Should be fun in a domestic situation!!!

Tis the very same driver used in the Quested top lines and also PMC Studio Reference series.

Progress is coming along nicely. I've had a slight change of plan now and have decided to do a stealth install. The box look big, angular and ugly. So I'm planning to turn it into a piece of furniture - most probably a chest or similar.

To be honest I simply can't be bothered to cut and add the other panels required to finish the box, I did also plan on finishing the bare MDF cabinet in a pine cladded fashion similar to a blanket box or chest but that won't be happening either now. The main reason behind all this is that I'm expecting delivery of an SVS CS-Ultra next week and figure that I'll stick with that since it continually gets high praise in these parts.

However I'm almost certain that this design would better the SVS for musicality, extension and distortion. But thanks to my lack of motivation I'm hanging up my router and sticking with the SVS - in other words I'm counting on one of you guys to finish what I started

AH man - sorry to hear! I'm watching this auction! Woudl the BSB 100 panel be enough to drive it until I could afford to upgrade the panel?

The BSB 100w plate amp would be fine till you feel need the need to upgrade - you may find it perfect and not bother at all depending on the sort of levels you listen to.

The Volt driver is an 8ohm nominal load with single voice coil and rated at 300w RMS continuous power handling also has a sensitivity of 92dB. So 100w from BSB should get it going nicely.

For a possible buyer of this driver do you have the plans from which you were going to make the cabinet it would fit in ?? Wondered if the driver was picked up from yours there might be chance of a copy ???

The design that I drew up was a transmission line sub, which gives phenominal low end and extension but requires a BIG box. Although the sketch below doesn't show the dimensions, it is infact 110cm H x 45 W x 55 D. A way around the unsightly large box was to turn it on its side, so the driver is downward firing and clad the MDF box in pine or similar and then add some feet, making the whole thing look like a chest.

You could have had my finished MDF box but it was skipped last weekend whilst we were landscaping the garden. Typical luck and if I'd kept it nobody would have wanted it and I'd have been stuck with it in the shed for months!

Shame, I put a £105 bid in, (p.a.stuhlfelder) but I couldn't carry on bidding because I was out tonight, luckily someone else got it because I'm kinda skint at the moment (damn Alfa engine blowing!) but if it was someone off these boards congrats! It would have been a fun project!

Glad you got at least a third of what you paid for it...

Like the Starwars Lego you sold not so long ago, I used to build that stuff when I was a bit younger

Not sold the sub either, the guy who bought it has backed out on the deal, so it looks like I'm going to end up keeping it

I may just replace the Vista's at the front with some monsterous 3 way's, perhaps with the Scanspeak Ring Radiators and ATC dome midranges alongside the Volt 15's

I recieved the following email on the 29th July:

"Would you be willing to sell the sub outside of ebay.

If so how much would you want for it.

I replied:

"Hi there,

Would be willing to forgo the auction but I'd be looking for £150 including postage on the driver.

If your serious about a deal then feel free to call me on 01246 ****** and we can discuss further

I then get the following reply:

"Had a think about this and decided just to bid on your auction. Then we are both covered if problems happen.

OK, fine I thought, no problems. Then after the auction ended I recieved this email.

"Sorry but I think I'll have to pass on your sub. I'm short on cash at the minute.

Thanks"

Now I thought this was the winning bidder replying here, in otherwords you TMH, though that obviously isn't the case.

Its just that he seemed so interested and then he emailed after the auction to say that he didn't want it because of money. Well I naturally assumed he was the winning bidder.

Looking through my email, which I haven't checked all day until I spotted this and I see that the other persons user name is different to yours. Something I should have checked but just assumed given the circumstances leading upto and after the sale.

You are of course welcome to the driver and you can indeed pick up.

Sorry for any confusion.
