"Home made" TV and AV unit

Hi, looking for any advise from anyone who may have attempted something similar.

I've currently got one of those standard wooden type TV stands you get along with your TV with only enough space for a VCR, Digital box and DVD.

I need a bigger one now to incorporate my new amp, centre speaker and mini disk player and rather than forking out £100's !!!! I was thinking of re-using the nice round front and rear support and re-attaching them to new, thicker and wider MDF, in place of the existing laminated chipboard.

My question is, I need to (spray?) paint it a silvery grey colour again to match everything, and wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to the type of paint. I was considering halfords car paint, but how is this on MDF, and on existing laminated chipboard?
