Trying to hang 42" LCD on plasterboard wall

Hello everyone!

im new and not very good with all this so please excuse me!

Basically, i have just bought a new lcd tv 42" its 20.5kg in weight.

The big problem we have is putting it on the living room wall, at the mo its on a stand and obviously would much rather it was on the living room wall but the wall we want it on is a plasterboard wall with the bedroom on the other side of it.

We bought a stud finder and found that we had metal studs that were spaced at a distance at all four corners of the bracket that we're using, so really only four corners of the bracket leaves us only four screwing points? Is there a way around this or does anybody know what kind of bolts to use and will only four corners be good enough for a 42" lcd?

The bracket has lots of holes to put lots of bolts thru it but because of the lack of metal studs behind the wall i wasnt too sure if it was still possible or secure enough to just use the four metal studs that the stud finder found?

im so sorry if this all a bit vague!!!!

im rubbish at all this forum stuff so please forgive the vagueness!! and please anyones help would be really grateful!!

Thanks people xx

Ps i dont think there is any timber at all in the wall?? i think its just metal studs? would this still be possible to do????

No expert, but I think you would need to put in more supports, means hacking a hole in the wall, but could also be a good time to hide cables too

I think you'll find a thread about buiding questions, you could always ask on that thread, you may get a professional response.....

I hung a 42" plasma on a plasterboard wall, however i got 4 screws into timber studs and then put a futher 8 screws (for added security) into the plasterboard using metal selftapping rawlplugs to hold it.

If you can screw securily into the metal studs (not sure if possible, cant advise on this) then you should be ok doing as i have done with as many other screws into the plasterboard as you feel you need.

Someone with experience of metal stud walls will advise you better.

Also ensure there is enough room between TV and wall for your connections - scarts especially stick out!

I've just hung my 32" LCD on a stud wall. There was one (very thin) stud, as the wall was actually made up of a cardboard type honeycomb configuration which was sandwiched between either side of the wall.

Therefore I used about 12 of these type fixingsRawlplug Interset 41605 M4 x 20, 5010445416057

I wasn't sure how well it would hold but to my surprise it feels pretty solid. If you were to add a load of these in addition to your metal studs Im sure it will be fine!

You can easily hang 25kg on plasterboard with one fixing if you use the right type fixings like

ITW pro 6 fixings, Fischer UX plugs, ITW Satelis (which will get the highest load) brolly type fixings like one posted above.

Most of the load when you hang your tv on plasterboard on a FLAT wall bracket is in shear ie pulling down its only a real problem when the load is in tension ie pulling out from the plasterboard say with a cantilever (swings out on an arm) type bracket

I have had a 42" Plasma 35kg on plasterboard for over 2 yrs no problems.

If you are not wanting to take a chance a large frame fixing into the block/brick behind the plasterboard will solve your problems.

Rab.

The fixing i linked to states a pullout load of 50kg per fixing or normal load of 100kg per fixing

Well since it has such a small dia it would be a brave man that puts 50kg pull out on that fixing in plasterboard trust me.

Yes you would be brave or stupid to hang 50kg off 1 fixing as that is maximum load, a tv weights about 30-35kg max so 4-6 fixing would be more than sufficient

screw some 1/2" plywood into the main studs on the wall where you want to hang your t.v. about 4" smaller than your t.v.,if your tv is 42" then use 38" wide you will get 3 rows of screws in it, you can then paint it to what you want. fix your back plate to this and you can hang what you want with no prob`s
