Re: Cove lighting, first attempt....

Looks great

Looking to do something similar in our new build, except I want to flood the walls and ceiling with light. I am going to use RGB LEDS so I can have any colour I like. Well thats the plan!

Re: Cove lighting, first attempt....

Looking good so far Tony.

I'm intrigued to see how the room will look with a lighting trough and coving in the room.

I went purley for a lighting trough in the end. I saw another members post on here who had both but they had taller than standard ceilings. I have standard height ceilings and was unsure how it would work, so borrowed mitsiturbo's idea and I'm really pleased with it.

It's surprisingly cheap to put together and not that difficult really as long as you can get the mdf angles cut.

Are you planning on painting the trough, and will you paint it the same colour as the walls or the coving?

@S2Tigger. RGB led's are cool, I have them and it's great to see them in action, although depending on your room colour choices, you'll probably stick with one or two colours at most... Still it's good for showing off. Make sure you price the job up first though, the RGB setup is significantly dearer than rope light.

Pics of my build are linked from my signature.

Keep the pics coming.

Re: Cove lighting, first attempt....

Hi barry,
You can't tell from the photo, but the MDF is the same cream colour as the walls. When you walk in the room, in the day, you don;t really notice its there. I started off with 5", but it was far to big, so dropped down to 4" wide.

The room isn't very big, so just going to leave it on one wall, only did it as a bit of an experiment really, but love it now. Cost about £30 all in, including the rope lighting from TLC lighting.

The next stage is to hang a 37" Panasonic Plasma on the wall opposite the wall with the lights on.....The wall is made from Aircrate!!!!

Im just waiting for the TV to arrive, then its going on.....can't be done I here you cry!!!.....watch this space!!

Regards
Tony

Re: Cove lighting, first attempt....

Ah yes, taking pictures in dim light isn't easy is it!

In mine I painted it white to match the ceiling, strange how we chose different options... That said, I think mine would have looked really bad in aubergine...

I was going to use the TLC rope light before going overboard and ordering the RGBs.

Good luck with the TV, I'm not 100% sure what aircrete is, but I'm guessing it's a very light block work that's not designed to take weight...!

Still, there's always accident insurance!

Cheers

Barry

Re: Cove lighting, first attempt....

Aircrate is two pieces of plasterboard, about inch and a half apart, seperated by pieces of thin card.

Looks great mate.

Guys, I was thinking of doing something similar, but different. My idea was to drill a 10mm diameter hole every 100mm apart in the front of my coving, and sit rope lights behind inside, so the only light coming out would be via these 10mm holes. I dont want loads of light, more of a mood thing. Anybody tried this before or know how good it would be?

Have you thought about using that LED lighting that people are using in skirting boards?

Just wonder if holes in the cove will look strange during daylight hours.
