Projecting through a wall?

Just wondered if anyone on here has gone for a projector set-up, where they have projected from another room and into the viewing room porthole style I guess. I need to create distance from my viewing wall and as a plus exclude pj fan noise. My aim is to gain an extra 2 ft, so was wondering how to calculate the hole size and see if was aesthetically viable (i.e is it going to be too big n ugly).

Also are there known problems when it comes to projecting through glass (refraction issues ect). Not necessarily going to use glass (or any other obstruction) just considering options.

Projector will be the Optoma HD65

Yeah thanks mate. I did actually see that one, it's what pushed the idea really. The difference is I will be sitting the pj further from the wall (approx 2ft) and my concern is just how big the hole may need to be to allow the image through. But thanks for the link

p.s just read the piece about the non reflective glass, guess I learnt something new second time round, thanks again

Hi there

i have seen some were in av forums i think? were a picture frame on the wall moves using motors and gears and in the wall behind the picture frame is a projector. there was a video of it, the chap pushed one button on his remote and the screen came down the blinds came down and the picture on the wall moved revelling the projector. it was very cool. using this way it wouldnt matter what size hole it was as long as the picture covered the hole

What projector are going to use? does it have a 12 volt trigger?

Optoma HD65 & yes it has a 12v trigger.

If you set up a projector 2ft plus the thickness of the wall away from any wall wont the corresponding picture size relect the maximum hole size needed?

Well yes, but if you use this picture frame idea you can make the hole bigger in the wall, this should not interfere with the picture size also with the hole in the wall being bigger more air can flow around the projector as the lens will get hot, then you can make a picture frame to the size you need to cover the hole

Not quite sure what you mean by this but I have just been informed by another helpful member that the pj will project an approximate 17" x 9.5" image at 2ft distance from the lens. From this I will add to when cutting through the partition wall taking into account that the projected image will increase the further it goes through.

The moving picture is an idea to play with but unsure if I want the added headache regarding the set-up but who knows.

The moving picture link has given me an option. Although I can't use a picture due to a feature wall I have, similar to the rectangular blocks "The Force" has in his in his living room, I do still want to
1. cut a projector hole through to the next room
2. use automation.

I want the use one of the rectangular blocks as a flip up doorway like this

Does anyone know if linear actuators can be used to open and close this (if so how) and also how easy/hard is it to link up to the 12v trigger of the pj?

Not a great google mock up, but if you see the top row of blocks being three across rather then the two shown, it would be the middle one that I would create the hatch through.

It will be approx 12" x 26" x 1" made of MDF and obviously hinged at the top to a framework created inside the partition wall.

On the back side of the wall (the projector side) I may go for a sliding picture or similar.
