Recessing speakers into wall

Hi,
I'm currently in the process of building a false wall ( 300mm deep ) to hold a recessed 55" LCD, KEF 3005se speakers and a fireplace.

SWMBO doesn't like the idea of 'lots of speakers sticking out of the wall' - I already compromised by getting the KEF 3005se . Got my own back though when she saw the framing and realised TV will be bigger than fireplace . needs to be - due to room shape and door/window positions, we'll be sitting almost 18ft from it!!.

So I was wondering if I could build some alcoves (I have room - just!) to hold the LCR speakers without affecting the acustics. Then I could build some acusticly transparent covers for them. Couldn't go down the in wall route as there wasn't the width to take them or the height between mantle and TV for a decent in wall centre. the room is about 4mx6m with the false wall being on on of the 4m sides.

So does any one have any advice on whether this will actually work

Re: Recessing speakers into wall

Hi Tux

This has actually been done quite by quite a few members on here, see Albriscoe's conservatory, elootos, foomanchu and otheres for ideas in building recessed boxes into a (false) wall with 'normal' speakers. It's a good compromise on cost and quality and gives a much wider choice. I did'nt have the depth required for my surrounds which was one of the reasons I went for dedicated inwalls.

You can get acoustically transparent speaker cloth from ebay, Maplins and I'm sure loads of other places. Good luck with the project and don't forget the pictures!

Thanks for that - Gives me a little more courage to play . Just hope she doesn't notice the rears speakers on the walls (Solid walls, so I can't sink them)
